This is a great guide - well worth the price.
After glancing through some other well-known travel guides and this one, I used Rick Steves (the sixth edition published in June 2016) when I went to Croatia and Montenegro in September, and 99% of the book is spot on (we used TripAdvisor for a few different restaurant selections, which seemed to work a bit better for us in the places we went...and we had to supplement the book with TripAdvisor recommendations, particularly in Montenegro...otherwise, it would've been 100%...it's still absolutely worth it). I look forward to using this book again if/when I travel to Slovenia (which I hope will be in the near future!). The short chapter at the end of the book on Yugoslavia and the breakup of the countries and people groups was the most clear, concise version of events that I found anywhere else (speaking to local people there or learning more in museums tended to be very confusing and/or extremely partisan, which is not surprising considering the different perspectives). The recommendations on what to see and what to skip was very accurate (having experienced both), and the walking tours of the cities were very easy to navigate and gave us the most interesting overviews of the places we went. As a long-time Rick Steves fan, I highly recommend this book!

the book outlined the best ways to get there and what places to go
Got this book before my trip and thought I would only use it for a couple areas in Croatia, I was wrong! I used it for everything! I ready up about the walking tour info ahead of time and was able to give my travels friends info about what we were looking at, etc. We also decided to add some day trips to other countries from Croatia, the book outlined the best ways to get there and what places to go. We ended up exploring Mostar, Bosnia and Kotor, Montenegro. My friend I was traveling with joked that it was my travel diary as I was turning to it for everything! We went to some of the restaurant recommendations and loved the wine bar recommended in Split. I am so happy I had this with me on our trip, it made our navigating the cities SO much easier.

Loaded with information
I bought this book before a trip to Croatia and Montenegro. As far as I could tell, the information was concise and accurate. Since I was on a tour, I didn't take advantage of some of the author's self-guided trips but I found his descriptions of many places spot on.My only criticism is that it had nothing at all about the island of Vis, where I spent the last week of my trip. The island's history is typical in some ways of other Dalmatian Coast islands, but it has many unique features, ranging from Hellenistic burials to Tito's hidden shelters for people and torpedo boats. It would be worth including.

Good for getting around in unfamiliar territory
I always use the Rick Steves' guides for that initial orientation to a place. His team does a great job of addressing all those little details. How the transportation works, buying tickets, shops, currency, the various ways to get from here to there whether you've chosen public transportation or car rental. I haven't read any other guides (I'm talking about the big ones, not the local bloggers) that are as comprehensive. I always prefer to go a little more off the beaten path so I don't usually use his lodging and restaurant recommendations. When I do go with one of his food or lodging recommendations - they are just as promised.

Very handy, useful introduction to two fascinating countries. We bought this in anticipation of a Rick Steves tour, which was a wonderful experience that exceeded our expectations, but you could easily rely on this guide for a tour on your own. It does a great job putting a complicated history in reasonable context as well as providing recommendations on sights to see, where to stay, where to eat, etc. We like the Rick Steves ethic of traveling light and appreciating the people.

The Best Resource Book for Croatia & Slovenia
This book was extremely helpful, as its contents are very accurate as my college-age daughter planned a trip to Europe with her boyfriend. It contains a great level of detail and my daughter actually took it with her, and found it to be very valuable and worthwhile for her trip. Rick's books are a great resource, and I would definitely buy them again when the need arises!!! Happy traveling, but only with Rick's books !!!

A guide that works even if you disagree with his overall evaluation of places
As usual, Steves provides detailed information that allows you to get away from the basic tourist places once you have been to them. While I disagreed with his overall evaluation of some places (like Lake Bled), he provided for my tastes by giving me guidance that took me to places that were the polar opposites of such places, thereby allowing me to focus on things that appeal to my tastes. Plus his recommendations on ice-cream places was invaluable!

Perfect companion book for a tour through these countries
Perfect companion book for a tour through these countries. Even though some of the prices he listed were already out of date (for example, it costs 150 Kn to walk the city wall of Dubrovnik in September 2017), his recommendations were spot-on and helped us feel that we got the most out of our brief time in Croatia and Slovenia.
