Product Description Uma Thurman and Juliette Lewis, two of today's most sensational actresses, tackle what it was to be single in the 80's in a new movie with a terrific 80's soundtrack. It's 1987 in Bayonne, New Jersey. The bars are full and smoky and Debby (Thurman) and Beth (Lewis) are out looking for a good time. Debby is searching for the kind of love they sing about in songs, the kind that lasts forever. What she can't see is that most guys are only looking for a love that lasts one night. From Mira Nair, director of Monsoon Wedding and Mississippi Masala. .com Uma Thurman is painful to watch in Hysterical Blindness--and that's a compliment. Thurman completely gives herself over to her trashy character, a pathetically self-deluding good-time girl who hangs out in a tavern in Bayonne, New Jersey, circa 1987. She occupies the bar stool next to her best bud (a dead-on Juliette Lewis), willing herself to believe that an obviously indifferent pick-up is Mr. Right. Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) directed this familiar but nicely-rendered HBO production; her visual style, full of obscured sightlines and opaque glass, emphasizes the heroine's inability to see clearly. Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, as Thurman's mom and her gentleman suitor, add an echo of Cassavetes realism. But it's Thurman's tour de force, capturing the kind of lost soul whose idea of first-date chat is to break an awkward silence by boasting about her best sexual skill. She will make you cringe. --Robert Horton

Excellent
I love this movie. I knew girls like Debby. She literally said and did everything girls would do to attract a guy. Being into cars, saying your just like that, dressing in animal print, fishnet stockings, because in some rock songs says it was sexy. I see someone said this movie lacks depth. He lacks depth saying that. This movie literally nails it with how some girls were. They just didn't get it. And it's not just a Jersey thing.

Bad dvd
Unfortunately this DVD will not seem to play. I thought I had an issue with the media player on my laptop, but I’ve since played other DVD’s successfully without issue. When I try to play this DVD, I’m prompted there is an issue and I receive an error message. Waste of my money. Defective DVD.

Not very good.
Hated the beginning especially - two young women "desperate" for male attention. The characters lacked depth.

Hysterical Blindness
I initially saw this HBO special movie on HBO. Being a Jersey Girl, myself, I connected with the characters & their life styles. I'm not a big Uma Thurman or Juliet Lewis fan, but they both portrayed Jersey Girls perfectly, hair, accent, clothing & all! Both Gena Rowlands & Ben Gazzara portrayed their characters beautifully! I'm a big fan of them both. Well worth watching.

I love this movie
Not sure why, but I do love this movie. Great cast, Juliette Lewis, Uma Thurman, Gena Rowland & Ben Gazara. And Callie Thorne, just before she would have landed her role as 'Sheila' in "Rescue Me". It's the '80's and these 2 desperate chicks from Jersey seem to be on an eternal man-hunt, but not at hot-spot night clubs, they do it in Jersey bars. Bring on the big hair & hair spray. From 2002-2003 - an HBO made-for-cable movie.
