Queen Victoria Would Likely Approve
These are some of my favorite hard candies. Not too sweet and easy enough to pop one in your mouth without anyone really noticing. I love bringing a tin along in my purse everywhere I go, for myself and to offer around. You would be amazed how diverse people’s reactions are to exotic and exquisite candy. These and Chowards violet candies are some of the best in terms of sharing and/or enjoying all to yourself. The flavor of violet is very subtle here, with a sweet and sophisticated anise center. Not a hard flavor like black licorice, it’s definitely what one would imagine a Victorian lady enjoying while curled up with a book or offering up to her favored guests for an afternoon tea.

These are the same I use to buy from Pier one Imports in the 80s.
So happy to find these again after 30 years or more! They bring back good memories of being a teen in the 80s. They do have a perfume taste, but that's the beauty, and the little seed in the middle is so cool.

Old Favorite
Since childhood, I have loved the taste & smell of violet. While I enjoy C.Howard violet mints/gum & the occasional odd brand found hither, tither & yon; these are my absolute favorites! My grandmother would always have a tin of these in her purse & nothing compares to our early childhood favorites & sweet memories. I love that these are still made in the traditional way, wrapped around an anise seed that has a long history. The story of how the candies were first made by Benedictine monks & the abbey, where the candies are still made, is intriguing. With all the the bizarre additives & adulteration of our foods & treats, wonderful to know that these are made from organic, unrefined cane sugar & essential oils by a family business that cares more about quality than quantity.I'm glad that these were shipped safely in a padded manila envelope, wrapped with the thin foam seen in the background of the picture as items sent through the USPS can be a gamble.

Tastes like soap
I tried this out because I thought it would be a good alternative to gum while studying. I don't like the taste, it didn't last very long at all, and the packaging is neither here nor there, but I can tell the quality of the candy was okay.Packaging - top is metal tin, bottom is plastic - weird aesthetically. Causes there to be an unsatisfying dull sound when the candy moves in the tin.Candy - just white hard round balls, kinda powdery-looking but very compact. There's a little chewy violet in the middle which is kinda fun. The taste is complex - at first it's fine and sweet, the sweetness then intensifies and fills your mouth and nose with the smell of old makeup, and it's got a vaguely cinnamon-y flavor to it, which I am guessing is the anise. Again, not really my thing and gave me a headache, but I appreciated the uniqueness of it.Purposes: I don't see this serving me as an after-lunch breath mint. It dissolves far too quickly to serve as a study aide. I could see this waking me up a bit though, just from the novelty of the taste.I really wanted to like it, but I unfortunately will not be purchasing this again.

Tastes like sweat.
I was looking forward to experiencing this classic candy after reading many reviews. It took 2 weeks to arrive. I was hesitant to try the candy because the tin packaging seemed to be sealed by scotch tape? My courage was not rewarded, because the candy tasted like straight BO/sweat. I tried to be patient, but that taste was insistent, until I couldn't stand it any more. I spit it out and rinsed my mouth thoroughly. I love sweets and am not prone to wasting a piece of candy, but I swear it tastes like it was made with sweat. I never tasted violet at all. Waste of money, and time.

Really weak flavor…. Formula change? Storage/packaging issues?
I first got these at a candy shop and I remember the flavor was STRONG with floral and powdery notes which made me fall in love with these candies. I decided to buy it from here because there was a discount happening and that specific shop heavily up charges candies. But I‘m extremely disappointed, the flavor isn’t as strong from when I first tried it. It’s still delicious though, just not very strong. Also I don’t understand some of these reviews who are complaining that it tastes like perfume and soap. They’re FLORAL flavored candies, what exactly did you expect?

European flower power
These candies are not for everyone. They have a floral flavor that reminds many of soap in the same way that lavender and rose can do that. I grew up on European candies and flavors and to me these smell and taste like Devon England.I buy these for 2 reasons. They are small enough to suck on for the sugar (diabetic) and not too yummy that I just crunch and want more PLUS they make your purse smell nice.Second is to pulverize them or dissolve them in water to make violet simple syrup. Pulverizing makes an interesting mix with powdered sugar on sweets. With most herbal or floral candies I think the flavor works best as an accent to fruit. I pair violet with blueberries or blackberries. In cocktails or mocktails with gin or berry vodka.
