Pediatrics PreTest Self-Assessment And Review, 14th Edition 14th Edition

I used this book as a supplement to UWorld for my pediatrics shelf, and it was fantastic! It does a great job of giving cases for your standard bread and butter diagnoses as well as throwing in some zebras that might show up on our shelves. The questions are very easy to get through. I went through this book in less than a week. A handful of the things had outdated guidelines (as of Dec 2018). Hopefully a new update will come soon.

All of the Pre-Test series books are good last minute prep resources for shelf exams ... I would utilize them after you have finished Uworld and already have a solid grasp of the foundations and basics, which these books are not really geared towards. They are great for throwing out zebras and random stuff you wouldn't have otherwise heard of and thus can bump you up from a decent / average grade to an 80% or above.It would definitely be better served by color for the photos because usually you can't tell wtf your looking at unless its an x-rayAlso I just have to throw out there that they had a question that specifically told you that you should prepare for intubation prior to giving epi to a patient undergoing an acute anaphylactic reaction ... don't go and kill some kid doing that one!

PreTest Peds provides fantastic prepartation for the shelf exam. It is well organized into various topics and presents cases that are also commonly seen in practice.

Good questions and explanations.

The material meets expectations and is good for the pediatric shelf, but there are a few problems.#1 which is not a big deal, but sends the wrong message to medical students is that in numerous questions, it states that a nurse practitioner is seeing patients. I don't care how healthcare is transforming. The cover of the book says it's good USMLE Prep and is written by physicians. There is no place for nurse practitioners here and I don't care to see questions describing them doing what board certified pediatricians ought to be doing.#2. More important is that there needs to be a better way to make answer choices more accessible. I suggest having 2-3 questions per page and having answers directly after or even having answers and explanations after each questions. Flipping through to a certain page to check my work reminds me of MCAT prep...yuck.#3. The questions are very formulaic. While it's easy to read, it's not an appropriate simulation of a shelf-exams in terms of difficulty.-----The pros are that the questions tackle a diverse number of pathologies that are encountered in pediatrics and do a good job explaining them in a Q&A format with minimal errors.

Excellent book. Very helpful for the shelf

This question book was everything for giving you great idea for what the shelf will give you, but some questions were way beyond the scope of what you needed for the shelf (for the Neuro section, I was getting every other question wrong, not gonna lie!). I used this along with U-World and BRS and did pretty decent on the board (79). I'm sure there are some people that did better, but ehh. Highly recommend; 13th edition the same thing if you wanna save money.

Why does every other case say, "The patient was seen by the pediatric nurse practitioner.." This is supposed to be a clerkship exam review for medical students (M.D. or D.O.) Is this an attempt by the author/publisher to brainwash students into believing a false equivalency between physicians and NPs?
