Prepping for power outage
Bought so I can hook up a portable generator during an extended power outtage. Living in central Florida, we never know during hurricane season if we'll lose power. Already have a sub panel near the pool so figured this would be the perfect addition.Wrote up instructions on connecting the generator and installed in both the sub-panel and main panel. First step is definitely to disconnect the main breaker so to not backfeed the electrical grid. Analyslzed the amperage draw for the circuits I want energized when using the generator so to not overload the circuits.Bought a generator connecting cord for the connection.Hope I just never have to use this.....

Solid, Compact - but not all cord ends fit well.
I suggest that you first check the fit of the cord end you will be using to ensure that the Twist-Lock will engage. I have used this product 3 times and have had problems with this each time.

Poor quality and overpriced!
This product was not easy to install. It came prewired with #10 short pigtails. Why would anyone want to splice a number 10? So I removed the receptacle and one of the three screws was cross threaded and stripped out while removing it and all the while the bottom flapper was difficult to keep open when doing so. Once removed and rewired, I had to rethread the hole that was stripped to a larger size screw since the hole was wrecked when removing the stripped screw. Once installed, the bottom flap was not very strong meaning it has a weak spring and I suspect will not last very long. To add insult to injury to the quality, the outside warning sticker was very crooked and paper meaning it will not last in an outside environment! I have a labeled that will be used to replace the cheap label. It’s like the person assembling this product didn’t care anything about quality. In addition, this rarely used top opening has zinc screw and a plastic feeling gasket. I know it will leak in time so I am going to silicone the edge and baking the entire box. The paint is not smooth and has pin holes all over it! I suggest getting a better product from another supplier. If I didn’t need this the day I received it, I would have sent it back. And by the way, if you need to use the left 3/4” knockout, they placed the ground clip in the way of having a flat surface for the water tight conduit to seal. I was able to jam the lock nut of the water tight connector so that I could use it but had to remove the brick mounted box again to do so making me install the box twice. You have to spin the connector on the outside since the inside lock nut will not turn since it had to be jammed against the weld that holds the ground lug to the box. So the outcome is, weak closing bottom flap, poor quality control and overpriced at over $80 when another similar product of better quality is about half in price. Do yourself a favor and buy something else!

A well made L14-30 generator power inlet box.
I am in the process of building a 900 sq. ft. solar powered cabin on 24 acres of wooded land. On days of dark overcast, I like to top off my solar battery plant using my generator. Until now, I used a heavy extension cord but wanted to complete the solar power plant by installing a power inlet box close to the generator.I noted other reviews where the wires on the L14-30 connector were wrong and the spring on the bottom door was weak. In my case, the wires were correct. I removed them so I could wire direct to the connector without wire nuts. However, I do have to agree that the spring is a bit weak. In my case, it doesn't matter because the generator is always plugged into the box.I like that the connector is on the bottom of the box so that rain cannot get into the connector, which would trip the GFCI breaker in my power distribution box inside the cabin if it did. I ran #10/3 Romex from the box to my panel, which will handle the full 30 Amps the box is designed for. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the Connecticut Electric 30 Amp Power Inlet Box.
