Los Angeles' Metal Church stand as one of the most innovative and unfortunately, one of the underappreciated heavy metal bands of the 1980's. And 'The Dark', their second album, is without any doubt, the masterpiece of their hard-driven air-guitar assault. Every track on this album, from the "Ton Of Bricks" attacking your ears at the beginning, to the incredible lament of "Watch The Children Pray" halfway through, right to the equally melodic and pounding "Burial At Sea" and "Western Alliance" at the end, is a classic. David Wayne's vocals did a great job on 'The Dark', giving the album a no-nonsense metal consistency and quality.

Heavy
One of the many albums that are the best from the group. Highly underrated and haven't received the credit they deserve.

The 'Church clean it up a bit
This one didn't quite kick my ass as hard as the eponymous debut. "The Dark" has some spit and polish to it, sacrificing the rawness of the debut for a more streamlined, somewhat "radio-friendly" recording. Now, mark my words--that does not mean that there are not some total scorchers cut into this wax. The LP itself opens with "Ton of Bricks" which the song title is pretty much indicative of how this song sounds, which is you, the listener, being crushed by bricks. Literally. "Start the Fire" has some of the best thrash style gang-vocals a metal fan is likely to hear, I always liked this track because it really shows off how talented these fellas could be. The big gun on "The Dark" was "Watch the Children Pray," a clean, semi-ballad that is a showcase for David Wayne and his monstrous vocal ability. The video got some decent rotation on MTV, and hard rock radio stations grabbed onto it for a while also, I can remember KSHE 95 here in the Midwest spinning it quite often. "Burial at Sea," a fourth quarter closer that is a barn-burner of a tune about an out of control sea voyage, is also worth one's listening time. I guess the real let down for me was no songs equal to "Gods of Wrath," but "Watch the Children Pray" misses this goal just by inches. A very worthy purchase though, considering its budget pricing, I would call it an ESSENTIAL buy.

Makes me want to start a fire!!!!
Metal Church was a good thrash band that put out some solid albums. This one is a killer with some great songs from start to finish. If you're a metal fan pick it up. I just wish they would remaster these albums.

Excellent Metal
As a metalhead from before there existed such a term:I heard of Metal Church through the great 80s Z-Rock radio. In 1986 or 87, I bought The Dark on vinyl, later on cassette, and now I finally have a CD copy. Premium loud jammin metal. One of my top 10 metal albums. Play it loud, and scare everyone in hearing distance!
