Opening the multi-tool the pliers are opened. The knife has a "nub" on the side that opens the knife. The knife locks into place. To release the knife into closed position, there's an internal "bar" that slides to the left.

It folds back the way it unfolded, mine was a bit stiff at first. To fold the knife blade back, there is a small plate that locks it for safety you will need to push in with your thumb
