With her purring passionate voice and arrangements both spare and sumptuous, Barbara Lewis recorded some of the best soul-pop of the 1960s. Though best remembered for her hits "Hello Stranger" (which Barbara wrote along with a number of her early singles),"Baby I'm Yours," and "Make Me Your Baby," she recorded a wealth of fine material for Atlantic Records throughout the 1960s that remains beloved among devotees of both the Beach Music and Northern Soul scenes, with such esteemed producers as Bert Berns, Arif Mardin, and Artie Butler behind the board. This two-CD collection is the most comprehensive anthology of her Atlantic recordings ever assembled, featuring the A-sides and B-sides of all 17 singles she issued for the label, many of which have never appeared on CD. Richie Unterberger’s notes feature exclusive quotes from Barbara Lewis herself; a soul essential! Disc One 1. My Heart Went Do Dat Da 2. The Longest Night of the Year 3. My Mama Told Me 4. Gonna Love You Till the End of Time 5. Hello Stranger 6. Think a Little Sugar 7. Straighten Up Your Heart 8. If You Love Her 9. Puppy Love 10. Snap Your Fingers 11. Someday We're Gonna Love Again 12. Amazing songs all in Package
I've long been a fan of Barbara Lewis and it's great that they have released this 2 CD'er with all her Atlantic singles. I have many of her singles on various complilations - but these recordings are clean and crisp sounding and all in one collection. There are even some that I didn't have in CD format that I am glad are finally available. Barbara had an amazing soulful voice and it shines on the songs included in this collection.

A CD to play on a continuous loop!
Barbara Lewis is the Queen of Silky Soul. Every song is a gem and her voice is so unique as well as sweet and oh so soothing. Her "B" sides were just as good as her hits and many songs that didn't have commercial success definitely should have. If you like Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, and the like you will love this CD. What a voice and what a sound!

Really quite nice, all mono mixes
This 2-CD set from Real Gone is much better than Mr. Facotti makes it sound. Yes, it is relatively barebones compared to a Bear Family or Ace CD. But, all the tracks are annotated with release date, single number, writer, and chart position (which is more than I can say for about 90% of the crap out there these days), and it includes every a- and b-side that Barbara Lewis released on Atlantic - precisely as advertised. Further, I think Richie Unterberger's essay is just fine.An important fact to note, however, is that these are uniformly the MONO mixes - a point not made in Amazon's product description. The mastering, I think, is a good, clean transfer from those tapes. Just be aware - if you want stereo, you'll need to pick up Rhino's earlier, less complete collection Hello Stranger: Best of , which is about 95% stereo. As is often the case, the mono mixes sometimes (though not always) have a little more "oomph" - having been mixed for AM radio - but I find the stereo mixes to be generally fine, and they certainly sound more interesting when listening on headphones or a high quality home system. So, I ended up keeping my old Rhino CD - and ripping some of the Real Gone tracks not included therein.

Expensive but Excellent Compilation!
Bought this 6 months ago and I'm surprised that there isn't any real reviews for this wonderful 2 disc set of Barbara Lewis singles on Atlantic records. The 34 songs (A's & B's in chronological order) on the compilation span the years 1962 to 1968, 10 of them are written by her. There's only a couple of tracks that miss the mark, most are either good, very good or top class. Highlights across the two discs are the wonderful 'Hello stranger', 'Straighten up your heart', 'Make me your baby', 'Don't forget about me', 'I'll make him love me' and 'I'm All you've got' from 1968. Others that are growing on me are 'Think a little sugar' and 'if you love her'. The sound quality is excellent throughout, great job 'Real gone music'. The 12 page mostly b/w booklet leaves a little to be desired. Overall, an expensive compilation that's well worth it, great sound quality too. 9/10.
