There's a little organizing of paperwork but pretty much just start playing

If we play as a family can one of our kids look up the solution? If we play over a few days we don't want them to look up the answer and ruin the game

The solutions are online, it depends on the age. You have to enter the corrent evidence before you get to the final solution, and there's 30 or so to pick from. So it is possible for them to figure it out without playing it correctly.

Is the game ruined after you play it once? Or can it be used again by someone else? Drawing on papers opening envelopes that arr sealed?

No, it's not ruined, as long as you don't scribble on it. We added some physical evidence mentioned in the evidence so that our kids could play the game on their own and have more 'stuff' to put on their corkboard. We copied everything, and posted it to our corkboard, and tagged, stringed, or scribbled on that.
