Bought for when needed
I bought this having bought a new printer. Wanted it sooner rather than later in case it proved hard to find later. Canon branded not third party so not expecting any problems. Delivered on time, well packaged.

Funciona bien aunque no deberiamos necesitar algo asi...
Funciona perfecto pero lo que no me gusta ea la cantidad de tinta que desperdicia la impresora... Debe haber una forma mejor de imprimr con esta calidad.

A very simple item. Arrives well packed every time. Ordered to make it re-usable. Read below.
A very simple item with a memory chip. Arrives well packed every time. It's just too bad that it doesn't have any screws or way to open it so one could self replace the sponges inside. Keep in mind that even if you managed to access and replace the sponges, the information that the cartridge is full will still remain in the chip. If you go in this route you should have a chip resetter in hand - chip resetter can be found on eBay. I mainly ordered 2 of these. One for backup, and the second one to try and convert its single use design to be permanent and re-usable. Keep reading below for more information. The 3 stars rating is due to the lack of way to open the enclosure, and due to the non-resettable chip that requires a 3rd party reset tool that for itself costs around $99 USD on eBay. Overpriced for a reset tool but if you did managed to open the enclosure to replace the sponges yourself then this tool is necessary. I myself DON'T recommend replacing the sponges and to use the opened enclosure since to open it you need a saw. And it could never be tight closed again to keep the waste ink from spilling inside your printer and onto your desk. I opened mine with a hand-saw (see pictures) just to see how it is built inside in order to make a modification to it. My intention is to attach a tube somehow to the waste ink nozzle from the inside of the cartridge, where the ink is poured from, and to lead its other end into an external bottle / enclosure. That way the waste ink doesn't flow into the maintenance cartridge enclosure itself but directly to an external container. And to reset the chip once the printer says that the maintenance cartridge is full, all you have to do it to eject the maintenance cartridge, use the resetter from eBay onto the chip, and then to re-insert the maintenance cartridge to its place to continue printing. The other benefit from doing this is that you could visually see when the printer is actually wasting ink during its operation.

Works but an expensive system
Canon uses both ink and optimizer to keep the head clean. All that expensive ink ends up in the maintenance cartridge. The expense of both waste ink and maintenance cartridge (which quickly fills) is probably how Canon makes plenty of extra income. On the other hand, the Canon system works well and keeps that expensive head squeaky-clean.
