The keyword is "guide". This is general tips and advice. It is up to you to take what it teaches and apply what works for you and your dog. Some of the methods are old school and a little harsh (I avoided these) but the bottom line is that once your dog knows that no matter what he/she will never gain ground without your permission you will have the perfect puppy. All this means is that you must discipline yourself to ALWAYS get your dog and return them to the spot where you told them to (sit/stay/come/wait etc.) and then release them.Working toward the smaller leads (leashes) is what gave me a leash free dog. When I "correct" my dog, I return him to the spot where he did not listen, use a stern voice, then release him and that is it. This happens once a week, I just wish kids would listen that well! I have not used a leash in at least 2 years (other than for a few times when absolutely required). He is always off leash at parks and even at rest areas.

Our 2 year old Multipooh was pulling on the leesh and barking at everything that moved so we had a progessional trainer visit us and he wanted $2300.00 for a one week personal dog training program. OK, I only write reviews when something is either exceeds my expectations or falls way short. I have had mixed results with all other methods of training my dogs. I have a very well-trained pomeranian at the moment (or so I thought). I actually purchased this system for my 9-week old lab puppy. The pom was trained using rewards(treats) and praise. In the end, he will still occasionally choose something he finds more valuable than my rewards. He still feels he is ultimately in control. I didn't even know it could be better, until now.I have had the Don Sullivan DVD's and collar for one week. I am only using it with the lab at this time. I actually ordered the large size by mistake and had to order a small collar to fit this puppy correctly. No big deal. The collar is very sturdy and comes with plenty of links for adjustment. Buy the small size unless you have full-grown large breed dog.The first four days I tried to walk my lab with a harness or leash were horrible. She hated it. I hated it. She would lie on the ground and refuse to leave the comforts of our home and yard. When we would eventually get far enough away and return home, she would pull against the least the entire distance. This can be very dangerous once a large dog is full grown. My breeder recommended this system. After one session practicing with it in the back yard, I was amazed. She stays by my side when I want her to. I no longer have to coax her out of from behind the shrubs. She doesn't dart back to the door and jump/claw at the door when we are headed inside. This morning we walked a 1/2 mile in the neighborhood and she only lagged behind one time requiring a small corrective action. She loved the walk. I loved the walk. She never pulled once.This system will require time to watch the individual lessons on the DVD. You will get out of it what you put into it. We are now working on the "down" command. We will also start retrieving and boundaries ASAP. BTW, the infomercial for this product was cheesy and I almost didn't buy it. I do not buy infomercial products ever. I guess I can't say that anymore though. Will I accomplish every lesson on the DVD's? Probably not. Just that fact that I can walk with her is worth it. I am convinced that the other basic lessons (including car-riding behavior) will be successful and will enable my dog and I to have a great life together. I have not decided when I will introduce some of these lessons to my (wife's) pomeranian.Finally, many of the negative reviews focus on the philosophy of using consequences to train a dog. The collar that comes with this system does not choke or harm the dog any more than a mother dog's disciplinary bites do. Don is right, if you ONLY reward your dog for positive behaviors, they will ultimately choose between your reward and the reward they are seeking (like darting across the street, eating a cushion, going into an off-limits room, etc.). One would not raise their children that way right? To each his own I guess. I can't not fathom how anyone who actually tried this product (in accordance with Don's methods on the DVD) could write a negative review. It just works.

Been training my now four month old pup for about a month now. Considering that there is a disclaimer right at the beginning of the first video stating that the program may not work well for pitbulls, it's going very well. My pitbull has learned to sit, stay, lay down, wait to eat until given command, return on command, and walk on the leash without pulling. He will even sit and lay down with the use of hand signs without saying the words. He is very stubborn and needs reminding sometimes and disciplining, but I am very pleased with his progress. He is wearing the blue training collar in the pics, which is a pinch collar, along with a regular collar. The pinch collar is comfortable enough for him to nap in or sleep in all night when I forget to take it off. The collar is great for correcting bad behavior. The videos are step by step and teach you how to correct all the bad habits and behaviors your dog may display. Before I ordered the program I was stressed out by my pups bad behavior and didn't know how to teach him what I wanted of him beyond potty training and sit command. Him running across the street and not listening to my call is what prompted me to buy the program. It's also cheaper on Amazon. :)

We have a 9 week old American Bulldog. Since she was only 6 weeks old she has been out of control, nipping, jumping while on her leash and nipping and ripping our clothes, she barks incessantly to get her way, eating any piece of poop or rock in the yard, she was just WILD! I thought she might be too young to start, but she house broke by 8 weeks, so I gave it a try. 5 minutes working with her using the small Command Collar (I bought the large with the set and ordered the small separately to start) and I had control of her on her training line! I'm excited to get into the rest of the program with her.

Today I received Don Sullivan's Perfect Dog DVD set. I only had a chance to watch 1st DVD. So far the information presented is clear and can definitely help someone new to the dog training. However, my biggest frustration was with almost every subject video file cuts off in the middle of Don's sentence. I can tell it was trimmed at the end of the video file but Don is still talking some valuable points when it cuts off.
