SHIMANO Baitrunner OC Spinning Reels

the baitrunner drag on these is great for trolling when you want to be able to set the pole down. The fish comes and hits the bait and doesn't feel you or your boat in a way that makes him spit the bait. The baitrunner drag goes to work letting out line and making a clicking noise so you can tell you are getting a bite. You then just pick up the pole and turn the handle and whamo the regular heavy drag kicks in and you hook the fish. When you are trolling the baitrunner drag is a much lighter drag that is just strong enough to be able to pull your shiner through the water without letting out line. The Daiwa version of this type of baitruner drag sucks by the way. It does not make enough noise to hear well when it is letting out line from a bite and it can't be set light enough for a bass to not feel the pole before you switch over to the regular drag. So it defeats the whole point of having it. The Baitrunner drag must be light enough to conceal your presence to the fish until you are ready to set the hook. If not then the fish just spits your bait out if its a bass which will spit the bait out as soon as they feel you or your poll pulling back for any length of time.

I bought the 4000 model for surf fishing in the Florida panhandle. Caught many bull reds, pampano, lady fish, all with no problems. The bait runner feature works great when rod is placed in a PVC rod holder driven in the sand. I paired the reel with a Tsunami Trophy rod, model TSTSS-702H. For surf fishing, this combo seems to work really well and looks great. For line I use Power Pro Super 8 Slick Fishing Line, 30lb test. I tried other line that was not as smooth and it was super noisy at the guide when reeling. Super 8 slick solved that problem. All in all, a great reel that is my go-to for surf fishing.

Since I got it on Amazon warehouse deals it was a steal. Great reel. Smoother than Penn Battle 2 and Fierce 2 series. Shimano baitrunner is Super to penn live liner and okuma Avenger versions. My only knock is the 4000 size uses felt washers and not carbon fiber ones.

I usually buy the Thunnus, the Baitrunner's more expensive brother. I can't tell much of a difference. So if cost is an issue, buy it.

These reels appear to be well built for the most part. I think they're a bit pricey for a reel with so few ball bearings. Time and use will tell if they hold up. The bail arm line pick up is plastic. This usually show wear quickly if the line doesn't align properly when the bail is tripped and line is reeled in under pressure. This is something that needs watching or the line will make a groove there and wear out the line quickly and the part must replaced.

Seems nice and works good. Kinda thinking my Okuma might be a little better built for better price.

i bought a shimano sienna, and now this shimano baitrunner. it's a noticeable improvement in smooth operation. i guess you pay a little more, you get a little more.
