Midwest Model 5600-5 Gallon Spill Proof Gas Can

This is a quality gas can that works well considering it is an EPA approved ventless type. I prefer the old style gas cans that have a rear vent and unrestricted spout but those type are now unavailable. For what it is it seems to work just fine. The plastic container itself is thick and robust.

This is a very well made gas can manufactured with relatively thick plastic. The top and rear handles make it relatively easy to maneuver and hold with a full can. The down side of this can (as with all modern EPA approved gas cans) is the spout. First off, the instructions on how to use the spout are under the label on the front of the can and it is not obvious. My wife and I spent quite a bit of time trying to "release" the spout so it would pour. After finally finding the instructions we somewhat amazed and the poor design of the release mechanism. The instruction tell you to take the spout (presumably not on the can yet) and press the red release tab down on a flat surface until it clicks. Put spout on the can and, press the spouts black ledge (located just in front of the red release tab) on the lip of filler tube/tank you are trying to fill. As soon as you release the pressure on the ledge, the release valve snaps shut. My wife and I pushed repeatedly on the red release tab prior to finding the instructions, but I don't think there is a human alive that can press it down by hand. I did a quick hack on can's screw cap and cut off the locking loop that you have to press to unscrew it. I've done this with every gas can I own. I placed and order with Amazon for an "easy pour" spout to replace the crazy one that comes with the can and I would highly recommend that if you are going to buy this gas purchase one of the replacement easy pour spouts at the same time.

I have a high-end gas can I use for my ATV. I bought two of these to supplement it, because I just bought a 9000 watt backup generator. When the power's out, nearby gas stations are likely to be closed. Of course, I used double-strength Sta-Bil in the gas that might sit a while."Only" 4 stars because: One must be patient to fill them. The inner strainer slows the flow of gas from the pump enough that one must throttle back the pump handle as much as possible, or it will overflow. My high-end can has a similar strainer, but it's much larger, so it accepts gas from a pump with no trouble. Then again, these cans cost less than half what I paid for my better one.Otherwise, I'm pleased. A few seconds of patience to learn to operate the nozzle properly, and the nozzle works very well. The clip allows one to rest the clip on the lip of the gas tank fill neck, and this holds the nozzle open. Easy enough.The cap seals well, so well in fact that after emptying one of the cans in warmer weather and sealing it up, the temps dropped about 30 degrees, and the can somewhat collapsed. I simply opened the cap a bit, and it gulped air and regained its shape. THAT is an air-tight seal.Changing over to pour mode is easy as gas cans go. The mixed nozzle/vent works well, with a reasonably smooth pour.This is a good 5 gallon can for a good price. I'd buy it again.
