Love all publications by Fr. Ray Brown
Fr. Raymond Brown is deceased, (1998), but his works live on. He was a noted Catholic Biblical scholar and a real good human being and priest. I have tapes of many of his talks that he did over the years and several of his books, the latest I bought being "The Gospel and Epistles of John". He wrote extensively on Biblical subjects and did several Bible Commentaries, notable the Anchor Bible Commentary section on John's Gospel. I just enjoy reading his insights and admire his scholarship. I was first introduced to Fr. Brown at the Religious Education Congress held yearly in Anaheim. He gave a wonderful talk on the story of the woman at the well (Jn.4:42) and I loved to listen to the tape of this talk--he made you feel like you were there.

Great commentary!
Brown is known for his scholarly work. This commentary is an abbreviated version of a larger work. This gets right to the heart of the matter, and is a great help in an in-depth study of John, and the epistles of John.

...
a little confusing with an expectation of the reader's understanding of some things that may surpass most of its readers. That said, it does take a stab at explanation and connection

Raymond Brown's Commentary on John
Raymond Brown, S.S. was one of the leading scriptural theologians of our time. This book is a worthy exposition of the gospel and epistles of John. Father Brown's area of expertise.

Pleased I bought it
Bought this as an aid to a study group I was attending on the Gospel of John. Very readable, or at least a tad more immediately accessible than RE Brown's powerful 1200-page two volume opus on the same subject! ("The Gospel According to John," Vols 1&2, Anchor Bible publication, now out of print but available used if you wish to pursue the subject.) But this book will be fine for most purposes

A very useful and readable summary of Raymond Brown's interpretation of the Gospel and Epistles of John. The text is printed alongside the commentary which is very useful and there are plenty of references and cross-references in the margins. The Introduction is concise but comprehensive. In short, for just over 100 pages, there is a wealth of stuff to learn and reflect on in relation to these key writings from the early Christian era.
