A Lack of Effort
THIS REVIEW PERTAINS TO THE VINYL RELEASE OF THIS SOUNDTRACK.********************************************************************I want to give this record 5 stars, but I cannot in good conscience. There are too many small things that add up that, as a sum, warrant the removal of a star.On the whole yes this is a well pressed record, most parts are dead silent on transitions and the details come through loud and clear with next to no hissing or popping. Unfortunately though, some transitions between songs on side D have such a high noise floor you'd think that there was wind blowing through my headphones. Others have also mentioned distortion on side D as well, which is insane because side D has some of the best music in the entire soundtrack!!Props for adding "On The Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter, I saw a lot of complaints that it was not added to the CD version of the score. And I do like how the music is mixed quieter on the record, which makes the score feel less taxing to listen to. Unfortunately though, on the whole the entire album lacks the depth/punch that it has on digital. Comparing a song like "One of Twelve" side by side with the digital version, it's clear the bass got heavily watered down on the record pressing. Such a shame, I don't feel like it would have been that hard to add to the record. And the record does not have a noticeable bump in quality over the digital version. Makes me doubt the vinyl mastering team. One less significant complaint, but big enough to voice, is the heptapod logogram on the cover/ inside of the gatefold. It's meaningless. I looked for over an hour, comparing it to a database of actual heptapod translations from the movie, and all it has is some parts of "Costello" combined with a warped "Ian" and then the right hand side is completely meaningless gibberish, only meant to look pretty. I feel like a massive opportunity was missed here to write something meaningful for the showcase heptapod logogram on the front of the cover, but no I guess that would have been too much work.Overall I don't feel a full effort was put into this vinyl release, which is a damn shame considering how enchanting and unlike anything else this score is. Mr. Jóhannsson, your music deserves better. RIP.

Excellent score but huge gaping hole in the soundtrack
Somewhat a shame on me for not checking first but I never even thought they could not include the most iconic song in the movie. After researching it more, the entire score is composed by the artist on the cover but he used Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight" in both the opening and closing scenes to bookend the movie. He felt these scenes were different thematically. Although I'm very happy with the overall score composed by Johann Johansson I wish the studio, label, lawyers, or whoever decided to not have the additional piece on the soundtrack had not been in the room for that meeting. If you do want that one piece of music and are like me, you can buy it independently as an MP3 or pick up the soundtrack fir Shutter Island.

Most realistic first contact film ever
Arrival dvd - this is the most believable, high quality, and thought provoking first contact film I have ever seen. If you are a true sci-fi fan and are tired of all the aliens that just happen to look really similar to humans, and want something you can truly wrap your mind around and makes you think, then this is for you. For some, the soundtrack alone is worth buying.

Amazing Score
The mysticism of this music is impressive, if you watch the movie, you will find that the relationship between each scene and its musical piece transmits the emotion you see on the screen, you have to enjoy it with a good read or if you want to have peace for a while. Highly recommended.

Great movie!
It’s original. The plot is new. The direction and production is outstanding. The acting is outstanding. And Amy Adams is outstanding as usual. I chose this movie to be my first 4K dvd.

Good for if you like beautiful music but also want to feel kinda like you're about to be killed by Lovecraftian horrors
I bought the score for this movie like, literally not even ten minutes after I left the theater. Johann Johannsson's score is breathtakingly good. The track "First Encounter" in particular is one that I find myself listening to over and over. It's beautiful but, at the same time, incredibly unsettling. The first time it blared over my car speakers I felt like I was going to start having heart palpitations. What I'm saying here is, WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE? All of the tracks are fantastic, and I can clearly see in my mind's eye the parts of the film that go along with Johann's cues, and to have a score tie in with a movie so well is truly rare. That said, a note: The song that plays in the credits is "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter, and is *NOT* on the score. If that song is why you're here, you'll have to get it somewhere else. But I certainly loved Johann's work for Arrival enough to throw down money for a physical copy, and hey, maybe you did, too. What a score. What a film. N I C E.

Get yourself a sub-woofer!
If you've seen the (extraordinary) movie then you'll know how important is the sound design to its sense of wonder and alien-ness. Jóhann Jóhannsson's score is inextricably part of that bass-heavy world, mixing human voices with synthesized sound and traditional instruments. The interplay of ominous rumblings, whale-like fanfares and strange chirruping noises is a world away from more traditional SF soundtracks, and all the better for it.Jóhannsson is, of course, director Denis Villeneuve's composer-of-choice and he seems almost telepathically-linked to the film-maker's artistic vision here, such that it's now impossible to imagine 'Arrival' being anything other than a joint vision of this unique first contact story. Can't wait to hear how they tackle 'Bladerunner 2049'!

Superb soundtrack for a superb film.
A superb soundtrack for a superb film. I'm a bit obsessed with this album to be honest and constantly listen to it whilst I work and drive. Perfectly reflects the otherworldly themes of the film. Fantastic stuff. If you like this you should check out his other soundtracks, especially Sicario and Prisoners.

Arrival.
I was enormously impressed by the film and Jóhann Jóhannsson`s music was such an integral part of that, I decided to get this disc. The pieces are short and minimalist in approach, but varied and atmospheric; they stand very well on their own without the visuals of the film - no detailed notes are provided, so it's difficult to say exactly how each piece was realised - though the singers and musicians are properly credited. An interesting, meditative album; otherworldly, as one would expect.Do check out the sound samples above; the CD has a running time of just over 54 minutes.

Ambient in a different vein...
Interesting piece of music that also shows the breadth of composer Jóhansson's styles when compared to something like the OST to "The Theory of Everything." Unfortunately, he died too young to reach what would have been a greater career than he had already carved out for himself.

Stunning OST, gorgeous vinyl
A stunning soundtrack, and DG's heavyweight black vinyl sounds simply amazing. Gloriously packaged too - every part of this release is vinyl heaven.
