Dog Sports Skills, Book 1: Developing Engagement and Relationship

Read, reread, reread again!
Anyone thinking about getting a dog for any reason must read this book.Would you go the the extra mile for a boss who is unpredictable, or who makes you feel uncomfortable, or who is just plain confusing? Unlikely! But, when you trust and respect someone, and when they're uplifting and fun to be around, you'd probably do just about anything for them.Denise Fenzi & Deb Jones have written this compelling guide that helps anyone from a pet owner who just wants their dog to enjoy being part of the family, to someone who wants to play more with their dog, and take it to any dog sport.Like all great things, they have explained the concepts of behavioural science and learning in simple language, and given us a practical path forward. While the concepts are simple, the work to achieve whatever you define to be a successful relationship with your dog is far from simple! But in this book, you can gain the knowledge and skills to start a more rewarding and successful relationship. You can build trust and have fun with your dog.I've only written this review after my 3rd read of this amazing book. And there will be many more reads! Cannot recommend this highly enough and can't wait to work through the others in this series. Thanks so much Denise and Deb. In particular, thanks for giving me the courage to tell my Obedience Class instructor that I don't need to pop my leash, or growl and tell my dog who's the boss.

Lazy Authors
Authors did not "optimize" this book for Kindle. They apparently took photos/images of the book's pages and put them up for sale. It is not readable on Kindle Cloud Reader, and the text is so small on my GIANT PHONE using Kindle reader, that I can't read it. I can't upload Kindle for PC because it has a virus. I am searching for a way to return this book. I almost bought a Kindle Fire today until I realized that almost every other book on the planet can be read on my phone.

Amazing!!!
If you’re into ANY dog sport you need these books. I recommend the Fenzi dog sports pod cast that’s free and the YouTube. Such a positive outlook on dog training but based on facts. I’m a “balanced” trainer who believes in adverse tools properly being used but Fenzi and those within the academy add SO many useful things to the tool box. While no one method is a one fits all - these can be applied to SO many dogs if not in one aspect of training then another. This isn’t a “do this because I say so.” These methods go in deep deep depth and have professionals in many areas of the dog world. I was struggling with some concepts and getting my dogs to do somethings and within two sessions my dogs were different dogs. I could go on for ages about these.

Really enjoyed this! I have trained German Shepherds in Schutzhund sport, and Border collies for herding. These dogs like to work for you. My biggest challenge has been to put a rally obedience advanced title on a smooth fox terrier male, who could care less if I am in the ring with him or not. The exercises and commentary in this book has helped me strengthen the connection with my boy...and I am looking forward to finishing his title and getting the second book as well. Didn't care for the bit about why they co authored the book . I thought that section was too long. I could care less why they wrote it together. Takes up valuable space where teaching material should be instead, but still a good book.

This volume is poor value.
A self-published edition that looks it. Needs editorial attention (e.g. what is a P.h.D. on the cover?, and what is the "out" cue referred to on p.138?) and a graphic designer to make an awkward layout more coherent. Although the training approach is commendable, and there are valid observations and techniques offered, they are inadequately fleshed-out. Light on content compared to many other books on canine training I own or have read. Often hyperbolic, folksy. This volume is poor value.
