Reveals what happens when they grow up
Ellen Winner is a Boston College Psychology Professor and a researcher at Harvard. Her book summarizes IQ and psychology research on gifted children. Most interesting was how to predict what happens when become adults.Academic giftedness often defined as 98% = 130 IQ.Terman & other studies showed that most of these kids take the safe route to finance-business, law, medical-dental and academia.Who becomes a creator? Often it's the self-motivated kid from a stressed out, messed up family, like Eminem, the Mozart of Rap."Creators have to be willing to risk failure, since anything new is likely to be denounced." - Ellen Winner.Creators need a big ego and unshakable belief in their vision to withstand inevitable obstacles.Eminem had nothing to lose. Kid from a wealthy family and good school knows that if he conforms and studies there will be a big paycheck and an attractive spouse. Why bother begging for grants with real research or trying to patent protect an invention?Book explains why many kids burn out.Book talks about birth order, nature vs nurture, asynchronous development and what happens to prodigies. Musical prodigies dazzle with technical proficiency for their age, but must develop expressive flair to keep an audience as adults.

Well researched, good read
Short but Very well researched text. I'm not a fan of the term "retarded," which was used often in a few of the chapters when speaking of savant children.

Every gifted teacher should read
As a certified gifted teacher, I recommend this book to teachers, parents and other interested individuals. And it's not just for people working with "smart" children....it also has excellent chapters on savants, children with multiple areas of speciality. Expresses some thought provoking ideas about our educational system and how it can deal with children who don't "color within the lines".
