The Official Guide to the GRE General Test

The book has 2 LONG practice tests. With the new format of the GRE being shorter, this technically DOES provide 4 practice tests. The most accurate test was the first one I took. Scored exactly what I got on that test on the real thing. The book serves as an extra book for practice problems in my opinion!! PS— this book has DIFFERENT problems than the ones you get upon purchasing your test! (The online practice ones through ets)

As a long-time GRE tutor, I urge you to get this book (or the previous version The Official Guide to the GRE Revised General Test, 2nd Edition).Here's an analogy to explain why: Let's say you're taking a class and studying for the final exam. The professor offers to sell you a copy of the previous years' exams. Sounds good, you think. But then you run into a guy in the hall who claims to be an expert on your professor's class. He offers to sell you a book with 12 exams that he says are similar to your professor's.Ok, do you: A. buy your professor's exams or B. buy the random guy's exams?Correct answer: A. Your professor wrote his exams! That makes them worth their weight in gold. The random "expert" might have tried to copy your professor's style, but he most likely went for QUANTITY over QUALITY.In test prep, quality matters. No matter what kind of GRE prep you use, authentic ETS GRE questions are most similar to the ones you'll face on test day, since they're written by the same people. There are hundreds of ETS questions that are unique to this book, so that's why you should buy it.Even though this book is 99.9% the same as the previous edition, I have to give it five stars. If this version has a low star rating, then some people will think it's not a good book and buy another company's book. They'll miss out on the opportunities this book provides for learning.Bottom Line: This book is well worth the price. I have been using this textbook majorly to study the quantitative section. I appreciate the explanations and examples the book uses to expound on certain aspects/or how I could arrive at a specific result [for both verbal reasoning, and analytical and quantitative sections]. There is also a math section expounding on the different topics, for instance, Algebra, Arithmetics, and Geometry. There is a question-and-answer section, after these topics, although some sections don't have explanations. You will have to review the examples/rules you studied in the said chapter to understand how to get the right answer. There are two major tests towards the end of the chapter with a question and answer section. These sections have expansive explanations too. So, this to me is a good deal. With sufficient dedication, I am bound to hack this GRE exam! :)

I only used this book for the verbal section, so I can’t speak to the qualitative. I ended up only having 2 days to prep for the GRE, and the practice questions and explanations were great and I got a 166 on the verbal section of the real GRE, largely due to this book.

Originally bought this guide since it was created by the writers of the GRE itself. I had some doubts, as other people had posted that this was only a good "supplemental book", and that it takes several months of studying to get a decent GRE score. However, after going through the entire book and taking only two timed, written practice tests (four tests available), I got a 310 combined score in less than two months of studying (4.0 analytical writing). I would not recommend buying any other guides as this is a total waste of your time/money. This is by far the best book if you want a good score on your GRE!!!

I used both this book AND the Kaplan book and neither one is ideal to be honest.ETS pros-practice tests are a very good simulation to the actual test whereas Kaplan practice tests aren’t so great (were structured very differently than the actual GRE test) - this is particularly true for the math section-helpful to understand structure of test overall - number of sections, etc.-shows actual test taking strategies for decision making to help with the timingETS cons:-Briefly reviews math definitions but is not in depth. Insufficient on its own for re-learning old concepts. Kaplan book does a much better job at this-Very brief analytical writing guidance, basically useless. Kaplan book does an excellent job on the analytical writing sectionKaplan pros:-In depth review of all math sections to refresh old concepts-in depth exercise for analytical writing - discusses how to improve your writing and has exercises for re programming sentences, etc-includes word roots, commonly used words and other cheat sheets in the appendix-also has tips for writing your personal statement-online resourcesKaplan cons:-practice tests are good for practice but much easier than ETS questions and not a good simulation-very little info on test taking strategies and budgeting time
