It is useful to have a biography of this significant figure available in the English language. many people no doubt are familiar with Monkey but probably few with the man who inspired the latter collection of tales. In addition to this are a number of shorter Chinese and Japanese stories which Waley has translated in his down to earth manner, despite the sometimes outlandish content of the stories themselves. Just as the Nasrudin stories of another culture give us insights into that stream, so too these tales demonstrate the wide ranging beliefs held in the Far East among the common people.
