The. Best. Gate. Ever!Honestly this is the best baby gate I’ve ever bought. Installation was pretty straightforward, I was able to do it alone with only a two year old and infant “helping”. Once it was installed, I realized why it was a little more expensive than some other gates - this thing looks like it will last until I have grandkids! Looks great, very sturdy, easy enough for older kids and adults to open (my five- and seven-year-olds can open it themselves, but not my toddler). Definitely worth every penny.

Great gate! It looks nice, was fairly easy to install, and is very secure. So far I haven't noticed any weathering or rust on any of the parts. It's perfect for keeping our pups out of trouble while on the deck. :)

I ordered this product three times through Amazon because the product I ordered "Outdoor Child Safety Gate brown SS-30OD-BR-C" was not the product listed on the packaging. Instead I received "Cardinal Gate SS-30A Outdoor stairway special in brown" with no explanation about why I received a different model product.I sent the product back twice because it was not the model number of the product I ordered and the image on the box was of a child near stairs, not the kid outside next to the deck gate. Why would the model number be different than what I ordered? I finally contacted the company directly and was told "yes the Stairway Special is the same as the Outdoor Child Safety gate in Brown."The gate is easy enough to install. I had to order the short extension model as well because my deck walkway is wider than the maximum with the primary gate.The gate doesn't feel very solid, but it works well enough to keep my kids on the deck. The latching mechanism is different than all the other baby gates I have or have used.

We needed a gate for our deck to keep our toddler from tying to go down the stairs constantly and this one has been perfect. We've been using it for several months now and the quality has been great. It was easy to install and the width is adjustable to fit the opening. It swings open smoothly and the latch is easy for coming and going. Also weatherproof! Very happy with this purchase.

I needed a better way to keep my dogs on my deck than blocking the steps with our deck furniture and this gate is great. Looks so much better than a bunch of chairs and plants blocking the stairs and certainly more useful! It arrived quickly and was easy to install.

I was looking for a good-quality, sturdy gate for the top of our deck steps. This one is perfect for the job! It was important to me that the gate swing 180 degrees so it can be positioned flat against the deck railing when we don't need it to be closed. It is also rated to be OK to use at the top of stairs which is essential for safety for this application. The mechanism to latch the gate is unusual and a touch counter-intuitive - you need to push the two latch tabs down and then lift the gate up while holding the tabs. It's really easy to do with one hand though, once you know how it works. This will be great when my little grandson starts walking - he won't easily be able to figure out how it opens. The photos show the gate closed, and then open against the deck railing. The gate is hardly noticeable when it's open. I installed it by myself (mechanically inclined 61-year-old woman) with no problem. I just followed the installation instructions exactly as written.

Solid construction, installed easily, but the brown is a very ugly color brown that doesn't really match the images. Also, there is a part included that is supposed to keep the gate from opening forward on it's own, but if installed per the instructions it is completely ineffective.

The gate arrived with a few places where the brown finish already has chipped or scratched off. The installation was easy (under 10 steps and very few pieces) and pretty quick.. 20 mins or more.. depending on your experience with basic tools. The only issue I had during the install was lining up the gate and the latch. The gate wanted to slant and the latch needed to line up parallel to that. That was the only installation step that didn't go fast. After that the gate was set up and ready.The gate looks good on my cedar deck. It is designed to be installed however the buyer wants (open-in/open-out, open-left/open-right). The gate can swing all the way open 180 degrees through, or it can be set up to function like a door opening 90 degrees, not passing the threshold. The latter option makes it much easier to close and lock the gate because it is stopped at the hinge.The gate design is simple which is good for installing the gate, but it accounts for most of this 3 star rating. To open the gate, you must lift the gate up while pressing down on a childproof latch. Since you physically lift the whole gate up this causes excessive wear. The gate is already wearing off it's finish in a few places on the first day of use. A childproof gate release button would've been a better design option. Or any design where you don't need to lift the whole gate to open and close it would have been a better choice. It isn't hard to open and close, it just isn't ideal, especially since it is already showing damage after one day of use.December 2019 Update: The gates finish does not last. It wears off fast and the finish color rubs off on your skin and clothes. Functionally, it still is doing its job.
