The Best Science Fiction You Probably Haven't Seen!
4.5 Stars. Seasons 1 through 4 (Spoiler-Free review.)CONTINUUM is four seasons of some of the best science fiction that you probably haven’t seen.It is proof that action, explosions and brainy plots CAN go together.Kiera Cameron is a police officer (AKA Protector) with a husband and son in a future run by a Corporate Congress. Life in 2077 appears to be a pretty benign, high-tech affair, all protected and served by a high-tech Citizens Protective Service. But a murderous terrorist organization is bent on disruption and death; at times on a huge scale. A handful of the group, known as Liber8, are about to be executed but escape to the past, circa 2012. Kiera is accidentally dragged back in time with them. In the new timeline, the terrorists begin their campaign to destroy the roots of the technology that leads to the future corporatocracy. Meanwhile, Kiera tries to establish a cover for herself, embedded with the Vancouver Police Department, stop the terrorists from altering the future, and figure out a way back to her family in her own time. CONTINUUM’s cast is on point without exception. (The show is a Canadian production but U.S. viewers will likely recognize some faces from familiar shows such as X Files, Andromeda and Stargate.) The show has some of the best character development you are likely to see. As the story arc moves through the successive seasons, viewers see that these characters each have real dimensions to them. Good guys and bad guys; none are entirely as expected. Alliances shift, shatter, reform. When there are losses, they aren’t for cheap shock value; you feel them. The plot is a twisty delight. The writing dodges nearly every typical genre trope we’ve come to expect; sometimes subtly, other times turning them and the plot on its ear. The unexpected comes at every turn. These are some of the things that make CONTINUUM stand out for me..Unfortunately, Season 4 not only turned out to be the final season, the number of episodes was cut in half. The creators were forced to wrap up their carefully crafted four-year Machiavellian plot in SIX episodes. They did an admirable job attempting to stick the landing but as a result, Season 4 was not as strong as the previous seasons. Some plot elements and characters that had been introduced earlier got stunted resolutions.I will always wonder what it could have been if the creators had been allowed to realize what they’d envisioned. But it is still a wonderful series and one of my all-time favorites. There is no reason for anyone who likes wickedly complex, original storytelling to miss it. Pay attention. Hang on. Enjoy!Strongly recommended.

fun especially if you like time travel
this is fun and creative in the use of the time travel gimmick in it's unfolding plot. Another interesting unstated feature of this is that it's unclear if the hero is fighting for the right side. Nominally she's a cop and cops are good right? And the person she's fighting against is a terrorist who may have been responsible for the deaths of thousands. But on the otherhand the terrorist is fighting facism (corporatism) and she's an enforcer of it. On the flip side it was the corporatism that rescued a crashing society. And the people the terrorist supposedly killed might not be what as cut and dried as what the cop believes. It's not really clear whether the hero or the anti-hero has the force of righteousness. Both are acting in good faith but at different levels of violence. So theres a lurking deep vibe.I find it puzzling the writiers don't make that delicious faulty-narrator aspect more explicit. One suspects perhaps they don't see it that way. Perhaps they think there's only one interpretation. I also always have the feeling they writers are winging it however since they don't have a series limited constraint on the story. They allow people's personalities to drift a bit to suite their convenience. So each week advances the plot slightly and also has some ancillary crime or mystery to solve. The second season concentrates more on the conspiracy which makes it more intriguing than the first. I just hope there's some resolution by the end but they seem to just add layers to the layers to keep you guessing and watching the next week show. Think I'm being suckered and they are pulling the X-files hocus pocus. It gets 4 stars for now, but 2 later if this is the con job I hoping its not. Secretly fearing the cigarette smoking man will show up in season 3.The short lived series Awake had a similar vibe but was better and more focused than this. More surreal. Interestingly even though Awake lasted 1 season, it had a powerful final episode that could be interpreted but as completing the story but leaving it open ended as well. I watched this because the recommendation engine said people who liked awake would like this. It was right.Update: as I feared this runs out of ideas in the 3rd season and they just throw stuff at the screen hoping something sticks. the last seconds of the last episode make for a promising start to season 4, but I'm not going to buy it early next year. Just wait for it on netflix.

Unexpectedly clever & complex sci-si / cop show fusion.
In season two we re-join future cop Kiera Cameron as she continues to track down the `Liber8' group of future terrorists. She is, of course, still backed up by her increasingly confused police partner Detective Carlos and the geeky sidekick Alec. This season, however, is not just more of the same - there is a depth and cleverness to the writing and plot that were only hinted at in season one. Alec has thankfully moved out of his parent's barn so his rite of passage sub-plot is an enjoyable, though occasionally improbable, diversion. The Liber8 group are fracturing through internal squabbles, the splendid Kellog continues to manipulate the future in his own witty inimitable style, the Julian / Theseus thread expands satisfyingly while the mysterious Escher plays his own enigmatic game and who or what are the Freelancers? The whole season is overall more coherent than the first with a deep underlying sub-plot centring on the whole reason for it all - who helped the Liber8 group to go back in time in the first place and why and was anything else that happened an accident? One slight annoyance is the 2.0 stereo soundtrack - there's absolutely no excuse for that in this day and age. That notwithstanding, from its seemingly formulaic sci-fi / cop show fusion inception, Continuum has matured into a surprisingly clever, engrossing, complex and highly watchable show and roll on season three - hopefully we won't have to wait too long for a UK release as it premiered in March 2014 in the US. Hopefully, the wardrobe budget will be higher and they can give Kiera a choice of a few raincoats rather than that ghastly green thing she wears all of the time.

Meet Mr. Escher
A three disc dvd box set containing all thirteen episodes of Continuum season two. A science fiction show set in present day [as it was when the show was on the air] Vancouver, it mixes police drama with time travel science fiction, as a police officer from the future pursues fugitives back in time. All episodes run forty minutes [approx]. As with season one, it does feature strong violence at times thus the 15 certificate. This is a not a jumping on point. New viewers should start with season one. This season picks up a short while after the end to season one. As Kiera continues her pursuit of the terrorists, the liberate group itself starts to fracture and a civil war among the members ensues. The law enforcers are caught in the crossfire.Meantime Kiera is still being investigated by the Feds. Alec gets something he never expected to have. But is it too good to be true? His brother has a choice of possible futures. And there are new players in town. What are their agendas? The season takes a couple of episodes to get going, because it stops having storylines of the week and starts to be part of one bigger story. It does click from episode three onwards, thanks to having a few storylines of the week for a while. But after a bit those are gone, and it is back to one bigger story. And it works perfectly from then on.Some episodes don't have quite as much development as others, but the show does always know where it's going. And does manage some strong emotional depth at times with a good few moral dilemmas as well. The coreography of the action scenes remains impressive. Since it's a bigger story it's also not afraid to change the status quo of the show if needs be. Which is always good to see.The last two episodes are quite gripping stuff, as the whole season comes together. you do get some answers. But you get more questions which set up what comes next. And an excellent cliffhanger as well.A very solid season of a good show that will leave you wanting to see what happens next. The discs have no extras at all.Language and subtitle options are:Languages: English, French.Subtitles: English, French, Dutch
