Will this work with multiple people?

You can move the transmitter from bike to bike. The receiver stays at the pit wall and I just had each one of my buddies put some velcro somewhere on their dash so we are able to share the transmitter. However this can only be used one at a time. On a side note though the receiver will work if someone else has another same exact transmitter as we tested that successfully.

I installed batteries into the transmitter and it comes on, but the receiver doesn't appear to have a place for batteries and will not power on?

You have to get a very small philips screwdriver and unscrew the four screws at the back of the receiver. The battery goes there.

I want to use this for motorcross. How far away from each other can they be (transmitter/receiver) what kind of alignment does it need?

I have never placed the beam any further than 25-30 feet from the transponder on the kart. I would recommend you place the beam as far as the height, set it as close to the height that the transponder is at on the bike and at the slowest corner.Hope this helps

Will this work for a 40 yard dash sprint? Roughly 5 seconds

If. You are saying a dash sprint from point A to point B as in track and field, no it will not work.It only works for a continuous lap such as a race track.
