Beautiful Girl: Celebrating the Wonders of Your Body

Affirmations and Self-acceptance for Young Girls
My 4yo loved all the positive messages in this book. She loves being a girl and this book has helped me shore up her self-love and confidence. It is also a pre-puberty book about puberty, but the language used is age appropriate for young children. (My daughter has already decided she can't wait to be a mommy so there were no surprises here as far as the language regarding having a baby. It is not descriptive, just affirmational.)

Read this first!!!! Then others as it is positive and gentle!
What a delightful book! And the art is fantastical!!!! We have read and reread and reread Beautiful Girl Celebrating the Wonders of Your Body by Christiane Northrup and this book laid a gentle groundwork for readying the child for Cycling to Grandma’s House. We practice gentle parenting so Beautiful Girl has been a treasure! We started reading it at age 8. And now Cycling to Grandma’s House is treasured as well as the book Moon Mother Moon Daughter by Janet Lucy & Terri Allison, a delightful and empowering book every girl should own, with education on proper self care in the light of our innate body cycles and wisdom. Also, we found the book Malia’s Magnificent Moontime by Angela Shabazz & Kendi Shabazz Muhammad an enlightening and interesting and helpful book as well. Also, the book Reaching for the Moon by Lucy H Pearce was great for the adult to read and reference in assisting our young girls through this life transition, a great book as well. So often we can feel like we are searching in the dark for ways to lift up the next generation and I feel these books I mentioned are an incredible gift to our daughters to help them see so much more than the western society presentation of puberty. Read these books and you will see all you are capable of and much, much more, as well as have a solid base to pass positivity on to our daughters about our precious bodies!

A Beautiful Way to Start or Continue Conversations with Your Young Daughters About Being Girls & Becoming Women
This simple illustrated book is a beautiful way to start or continue conversations (not delve into deep explicit explanations - the book leaves that to you as the parent to do) with your young daughters about being girls & becoming women. I have 4 daughters (baby to 9 yo). This book works on several levels as some of it will just go over the heads of the littlest and then you have laid the ground work that is safe and OK to talk with you about these kinds of feelings, questions or concerns whenever the older ones begin to have them. I bought this together with the American Girl book "The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls" and think they work well together.

Children's books are for children
I am a huge fan of Christiane Northrup and have read all her books. She is a brilliant writer for adults. Her use of similie (your body is like a mysterious garden) is lost on young children. Although the illustrations are charming and delightful, the text is abstract, wordy and out of reach for a four year old. There are no cute characters or engaging storyline for the child to empathize with.On a positive note, when Ms. Northrup has something to share, I think we should listen up. The most poignant part of the book is her wise advice about how to deal with touching that does not feel right. This is a topic that has not appeared in children's literature much. I recommend buying this book simply because it is a jump off point for discussion written by one of our greatest spiritual teachers.

It's beautifully illustrated, and leaves a lot of room for ...
I'm reading some of the reviews and wondering what people expected of this book. To me, it's a book to plant a seed that will inspire conversations and open dialogue, not a scientific what-to-expect book. It's beautifully illustrated, and leaves a lot of room for discussion. My 8 year old and I enjoyed reading it together, and I think it has opened some doors for her to ask questions. As we ease into the subject of puberty, I think it's helpful that it doesn't give readers too much too soon.

I like the concept for this book
I like the concept for this book, but wish it lived up to it's promise. I had to reword the page that talks about how my daughter shouldn't be embarrassed about her body....uh, thanks for putting that idea in her head yo! She isn't, but now she might be wondering that she should be. I can tell you that anytime someone said to me, "oh dont be embarassed" that NEVER had the intended affected....it made me feel stupid and MORE self conscious than simply saying something body positive. I'm being nit-picky, overall the book was great, but for parents specifically looking for a book that totally nails this subject, this is a little off mark.

Like having babies
My granddaughter's just turned 6 years old and when I read it to them it brought up some questions and concerns about their bodies. Like having babies...and my granddaughter asked what if I don't want to have a baby what do I do? I think the intention of the book is good but I think the content would be better for an older girl. They loved the artwork and so did I!

Beautiful body-positive messages for girls and women alike
Beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated, full of quotabe quotes (You have a special strength inside of you. It is there to help with all of the importants things you will need to do in your life), and vague referances to physical development (There is a lot that comes along with being a girl, and sometimes your body will surprise you) this is not an information book, but a very spiritually nourishing read that I also enjoy for the pleasure of the pictures and life affirming messages it holds for all girls and women alike, to encouage a positive body image, and help girls and women to know 'You are perfect just the way you are' because our bodys never stop changing.

Beautiful illistrations
My daughter and I really appreciated reading this book together. She was probably a little grown up for it. She was coming up for 11... But we loved the illustration and that bought forward some great conversation. So worth it for that... Looking forward to reading it with my younger daughter some time in the future...

Terrible wishy washy rubbish
Really disappointed with this book after reading such positive reviews before purchasing. It's pretty with nice font used. The content is pathetic and vague. This will do nothing for my 6 year old, probably ok for 3-4 year old but it's too expensive for such a vague book. It's not a story, just wishy washy words. Terrible.

Brilliant!
Absolutely adore this book as does my 6 year old daughter. Beautifully illustrated. Text is abstract but in a wonderful accessible way, it's doesn't frighten and opens up discussion. I think it makes a great foundation for future talks and information building. My daughter's Grandma also thought book was brilliant ( I was surprised).
