Q: If I put all the tiny peices of lego in this and carry it will all the pieces mix in together or do they stay in the sections?

There are compartments for each size of pieces of lego. The depth of the box is quite small and as far as I know it will transport well not mixing up with the rest of the pieces. I would suggest you email abeec Block Tech Storage - the makers - for their answer.

Yes the base on the lid can be popped out. It hooks into the lid at four points. We have taken it off when my son is playing with it and then put it back on, but can be a bit fiddly.
