How sturdy is it? Could I place a few pounds of flat weight on top of the lid? (Example: books, magazines)

It's actually pretty sturdy, I can pile up a ton of magazines and it holds up just fine

I need it w/out the lid - is it just tied on and can be taken off?

The lid has two small hemp type ties that attach the top to the bottom. It would appear these could easily be cut with small scissors. Removing the lid ties should not damage the bottom box portion. Also, the elongated latch on the side of the box could also be removed with small scissors as it is on with ties as well.

I use mine to hold this on my end table, like stamps, pens, scissors, loose cash and coins, fingernail clippers, address labels and even stationary to pin pal with my youngest grandchild. I have samples of face cream, an exacto knife to open packages. Anything that I might need. I love mine!
