Looks good in the end
The grille arrived in a thin cardboard box. The sharp ends of the grille punctured both ends of the box, probably during shipping. If the seller of this item would simply add some fiber-reinforced tape on the outside edge of the box, this wouldn't be a problem. Luckily my grille arrived without significant damage. But the box was in really bad shape.During installation on my 2011 Sonata I had to cut off a strip about 1/2 x 4 inches from the grille. The modification is where the grill meets up with the hood latch housing. The original grille makes room for the housing. This one accommodates the hood latch housing by bending and being in a state of tension. I figured the stressed plastic would probably crack in the long run. Cutting a little strip away from this grill wasn't very difficult, and it's hidden under the hood so it didn't have to be be done perfectly. I used a standing belt sander. A hacksaw blade would have worked, too. After this modification, the grille popped right into place. The original fasteners hold it in place along the top edge of the grille. If I had to install this again, I would try using a heat gun to soften the bent plastic and relieve the stress near the hood latch. It probably would have been faster and cleaner. My experience with the belt sander indicated that the grille is probably made from a tough PVC plastic that can withstand the careful application of heat to make a minor adjustment like this.Removing the original grille was much trickier than installing the replacement. The original has four small screws holding it to the front bumper cover. The bumper cover must be loosened at the top and carefully pulled away from the frame to access the screws. I inserted a rolled-up shop rag between the top edge of the grille and the car frame to provide enough space to get a hand behind the grille to remove the screws. A right-angle ratcheting screwdriver is needed because there is very little space to work. Pulling the bumper cover too far will crack the paint. There are documents and videos on-line that show how to remove the grill without having to also remove the entire bumper cover. The replacement grille does not have holes for the screws that connected the original grille to the bumper cover. The new grille stays in place without the screws, but it could rattle more. So far I haven't noticed any new noises. The car looks a lot better with this grille, so for me it was worth the trouble.
