SINNERS WELCOME

...she is not Mary Oliver. If you have followed her three memoirs (Liar's Club, Cherry, and Lit) you might expect something other than what you find here. To cut to the chase I like her memoirs better than I like her career poetry. She is so much a larger than life self-told story that poetry (and she is a journeyman poet, no doubt) leaves one wanting more.

She is a fantastic poet. I’m glad I recently learned about her.

Mary Karr has written so many great poems (four books) but so far this is my favorite compilation. I recommend reading her memoirs (The Liars' Club, Cherry and Lit) before reading her poetry. It's not a must, but there's fun in recognition and connecting the pieces of the puzzle. Mary is one of my favorite poets and her work makes me feel like I went to the Church of Poetry every time. I highly recommend Sinners Welcome to add to your collection.

This is poetry deep and turthful; no fancy words or complicated structure; just poetry carved down to its essense - each word is 'organic' to the whole - no other words would work and no extraneous flourishes necessary. She has lived her poems and it shows. While each person's life experiences are unique, our thoughts - at base - can be captured in the best poetry.

I really love Mary Kay's writing .I love the poems that are biographical, autobiographical and ones that I just plain relate to . I love her imagery and sassy metaphors that turn my head in the most unconventional way. She is top shelf and would love to hear her read her work someday somewhere!

For fans of Karr's memoirs, this should be a treat. Especially after you've read LIT. Gritty, dark poems tinged with redemption.

This is another fine product by Mary Karr, for lovers of Mary Karr's novels. Excellent and insightful writing. To obtain maximum appreciation, read her books (Liar's Club, Cherry, Lit) before you read this book of poetry and prose.

Wonderful, funny, moving. This sinner enjoyed the hell out of these poems.

As passional and introspective as poetry can get.I loved every page of it but especially the essay in the last part
