Book focuses on the actual fighting
This book was written by an author who understands military history and doesn't view the armed conflict as something getting in the way of an otherwise bland overgrown college thesis on wheat or/and gender relationships. Even if you are looking for a book on Syrian gender relationships during the war you should get this book as a source book to have an idea who the armed combatants are and the course of the fighting. He does describe the political landscaping the shifting alliances but gives plenty of attention to who is fighting, where they are fighting, and how the operations are conducted. The author does a great job describing the pre-war Syrian Armed Forces, especially it's air force and security services. He provides a breakdown of the SyAAF before the war and gives a picture of the air force during the first two years, including the use of PGM strikes from MiG fighters and the use of trainers to provide CAS support. There is an excellent breakdown of the Syrian Arab Army before the war, how it was organized, what exactly the term "special forces" means in the Syrian parlance, a breakdown of the equipment holdings of each division, and walks the read through the system of task forces used by the Regime during it's early operations. The book covers through the period where Iran takes greater role in running the fighting, the formation of the NDF, the transformation of the Syrian Army into a collection of militias, and the arrival of foreign Shia militias. The rebels are covered in some detail as well, from the protests, to the defections from the armed forces, and the greater role of Islamists caused by regional actors. An excellent catalogue of the rebels and pro-government militias is provided explain the major factions, who backs them, and an estimate on their size. There are the "usual" great artworks with demonstrative combat loads and pictures with helpful captions.I'm awaiting part-2.

Excellent book easy to read and follow
Only book so far that give more detail to the military campaign and its development then any other book I have read so far. Excellent book easy to read and follow. Book goes into detail of each phase of the conflict. The book has many pictures and colored drawings. The most interesting portion is the current status of the Syrian army and the setbacks it has encountered.
