The Klondike Quest: A Photographic Essay 1897-1899

This is the defining format to get as large size. I bought two of the paperback as companion gifts with "The Klondike Fever", but these much larger prints make this epic even more realistic. Of course, this book is meaningless without first reading the story - Pierre Berton's wit and understanding of the gold rush paints a vivid picture like few others manage. Together, these give an unparalleled history lesson as well as many truly great stories. Mr Berton shows his true understanding of the events when in the afterword he draws parallels to young men (and a few women!) going through war and how it changes them - mostly for the better through "aging beyond their years"...So, this book is a keeper - I can't recommend BOTH of them enough!

This is a wonderful pictorial history of what it was like to travel with the Stampede all the way to Dawson. Our tour guide introduced me to this book on out trip to the Yukon.

Excellent photos for time period and great information. Felt I was right there with them.

There is a sharp moral lesson describing the powerful raw power of greed when it overcomes common sense. As most readers already know the majority of the propectors did not find riches and many of those who did squandered the newfound wealth in no time.Nevertheless it is impressive to see what men and some women were willing to undergo tremendous hardship and superhuman suffering in order to find an ' easy way to wealth

Wow. I got a glance at someone's copy of this book while on a trip and just had to find my own copy. A fantastic collection of pictures and history. A must for anyone interested in the history of the Klondike gold rush, and if you aren't interested it might make you. It did me. And now I am off to read Berton's other books.

My partner bought this as he has become very interested in the Gold Rush after watching Gold Rush on the Discovery Channel. He has a few books on the subject but liked this one because it's very large and full of very interesting pictures. He says it is better to read one of the other books on the subject first then you can appreciate what the pictures are about.

I was shown this book on a recent trip to Alaska. I think it is out of print as only used copies available on Amazon. This ex-library book is in perfect condition and a really good price including delivery, so a great purchase and I am delighted. Fantastic photos and narrative.

Great to accompany his famous original book on the area. The Yukon still retains much of the charm and challenge he describes.
