can you lay on your stomach in this? What about sitting up a bit to read a book?

I turn the float over and lay on my stomach for back tanning, it is more comfortable due to my height. Laying in the float right side up is comfortable for front tanning and relaxing. I'm 400lbs and 6'4" and it holds me well too no matter which side I lay. I don't use the pillow but rest my head on the clear/pink rounded side and it is comfortable to read.

I don't have a pool, but I want to lie in the sun in my backyard with this, and fill with enough water to help keep me cool. Will it work forthat?

Absolutely. That’s exactly what I use this for. I live in Texas and my backyard is too small for a pool since I have large dogs (they need space to run). The bottom part is a separate compartment so you can submerge yourself with more water by not filling that as much with air. I have mine on a concrete patio so I do put a blanket under it to protect it from getting a hole. I am 5’1 and can lay in it fully (including my head) when not using the pillow. The pillow is also not attached so you can use or not use it

Can this hold 350-400 lbs?

It floats 420 no problem. The sides pull in quite a bit, so it looks a bit overloaded, but it floats easily. Fully inflate the outer chamber for the most dignified ride.

When deflated, is this float tub relatively compact / easy to pack? We will be purchasing it for vacation, will it fit in a medium suitcase?

Maybe in a large suitcase. It takes alot to deflate it because you have to pinch open the plug the entire time, it won't just deflate when you pull the plug top off. I had to have my Granddaughter lay on one end while I pinched the plug and as some air came out I would roll it up and she would move up further. We did this all the way to the end. Not all of the air will come out though. I have to say I love this tub though! It is really roomy and made really well!
