3m 550 is for similar materials & 540 disimilar which makes it softer than 550 but its still super tough and hard. The specs read better than urethane seal for automotive and my neighbor does ice machine repair in tx with it so re did my car's weld seals. scraped clean, sanded, primed, sealed, 3m 540, primed, sealed, painted, clear coat. no more leaks. we'll see about longevity but the results appear great.Plan your project and have what you are doing ready. Tube is rated to last 24hrs after opening. I got 48 hrs out of it. 3M website has a chemical recommendation to make smoothing the surface easier. I would assume using something else may compromise the product integrity. I used acetone to clean up but not on the product where applying to protect product integrity. Didn't have time to order other 3M product to smooth down bead, but most places will be hidden by car paneling so not a big deal for me.
