Q: Is this cooler supposed to have a water jug spike?

No idea what that is, but probably no. This is a very simple unit, just an open hole on top for the water jug to fit into, it drains directly into a stainless steel cooling chamber and water is drawn off via a pushbutton valve on the front that dispenses the water.

Q: can use spring water?

Yes you can use spring water. If the spring water has a high mineral content you may have to clean the unit more often than if you use reverse osmosis/distilled water.

Q: would like to put this device on a smart plug. will it work once its plugged in or do you manually have to push hot water/cold water switch each time?

The hot and cold switches on the unit are mechanical switches. A smart plug interrupts the power supply and should not affect mechanical switch functionality. Please keep in mind that continually unplugging the unit via the smart switch increases the wear on the cooling compressor as it will have to cool the water in the reservoir every time power is restored vs maintaining the water temperature.

Q: What happens if it leaks four months after you buy it?

Well, that's why I bought an extended warranty. By the way, mind leaks with SOME bottles. So retain the bottles that don't leak and reuse those
