Pacifiers Are Not Forever (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series)

We read this book for about a month before we finally took the pacifier away from my son permanently. I truly believe it helped in the transition from a paci at night to no more at all. It helped prepare him for the idea that he's giving away his paci and that they won't be around forever. Some days I wish I had a paci for him for my own sanity (they really are miracles) but that's not the book's fault haha! Either way this helped in the transition and I'm glad we had it.

It was time for the paci to go and I was looking for a book to help prepare my 2 year old for the transition. He loves to read and truly connects with books, so we got this one. He was very intrigued and he wanted to read it over and over. We did improvise some of the words... like using “paci” for all references to the pacifier since that’s what we call it. I weaved in a part where a garbage truck was going to pick up the paci “from the trashy,” which is what was going to happen at our house. I would ask him if he was ready to put his paci in the trashy and he started to say yes. By the time we did it, we had him put his pacies in the big garbage for the garbage truck to take on garbage day. He was so excited to do it. The “garbage truck” left him a fun package at the door step later that day and that was it! He never cried for the paci, but did ask for it the first night. I reminded him the garbage truck took it and he said, “yeah.” We would read the book as a reminder of what happened and why. The second night, he looked at his bed at bedtime and stated “garbage truck took paci.” That was the last I heard of the paci. He still likes to read the book from time to time even months after the paci has been gone.The book was helpful for us and is written well for toddlers to understand.

My son is 2 and has used his pacifier every single day of his life to help him sleep and he was very much obsessed with his pacis. I bought this book in preparation to kick the paci thinking we would do it in a few weeks. I wove a previous reviewer’s story that the trash truck would pick up the paci after he “threw it in the trashy” then would leave him a gift and we would have a “no more paci party”. On day two of reading this book my son took his paci out of his mouth right before bed and said “put paci in trashy” - I panicked because I was not expecting it to work so quickly and on its own with no prompting but he tossed it and went to bed. He was a little sad after he realized what he did but we reminded him trash truck would bring him a present and we would have a party the next day. In the gift from trash truck the next morning we included a crazy straw cup and whistles like some of the things mentioned they can do instead of suck on a pacifier in the book and he loved it. We decorated his play room and put party hats on all his stuffed animals and he thought it was great. It has been one week now and he still likes to read the book daily and remember that he told paci bye bye, then trash truck took it away. Truly thought this would be an excruciating process, this magic book, in our personal experience, made it shockingly easy.

The book was very easy for my toddler to understand, The words are simple, and she uses a variety of different words to describe a pacifier. She also gives helpful parent suggestions at the end of the book. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it seems to use older (5-6 year old) children in the pictures, which I find confusing considering the age most children wean from a pacifier is around 2-3 years old.

I got this for my daughter who was an avid paci user and could not nap or sleep at night without it. We read it quite a few times in the span of a few months but more of a concept for her to start the conversation. Then one night I was reading it and I told her that someday soon she would also need to throw her paci in the trash (one of the pages in the book). She stood up and said “I throw my paci in the trash now” marched to the kitchen and chucked it in the bin. Was not expecting that! She is 22 months old.It has now been about 2 weeks. The first few days she asked for it and I gently reminded her that pacis aren’t forever and she threw hers away, then I would provide her a distraction. She hasn’t asked for it in several days and I threw out the rest of her back up pacis.She is harder to rock to sleep at night, it takes her awhile to settle vs. when she would have the paci in. BUT it is gone and it was not as painful as I thought it would be, especially doing it so unexpectedly. This book definitely put the idea in her head and helped her come to terms with needing to grow out of it. Highly recommend!

I bought this book for my 22 month old. I bought "Bye Bye Binky" and "No More Pacifiers" at the same time. She much preferred to read the other books (and so did I!). We read this book only a handful of times and it's now collecting dust.The kids in this book look to be at least 8 years old (if not 10 or 12). The language is fine for toddlers as well as 4-6 year olds. It tells you that pacifiers are not forever, and there are other things you can do to comfort yourself like getting hugs and snuggling.It teaches other things to do to keep your mouth busy like blowing bubbles and whistling. To be honest, it reminded me too much of the idea that you can replace a cigarette smoker's oral fixation with gum or suckers. This book would be better for kids who use their pacifiers during the day and need to learn there are other fun things to do with their mouth. Not a great book for kids who only use a pacifier at night.I would recommend No More Pacifiers which also tells about different things you can do without a pacifier except the language is much more appealing to toddlers with rhymes and a sing-song rhythm. For older toddlers/kids, Bye Bye Binky is the story of a cat who eventually sends his pacifier away on a balloon.
