The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Wonderful retelling of a classic.
Loved this Norwegian tale as a child. Many newer versions miss the point and others are too scary. This is just right. My 2-7 year old grands are in love with it and retell/act out the story over and over. Illustrations are eye catching and fun as well!

Beautiful illustrations. Minimal words. I loved as a kid and now my kids do too.
For some reason this book stood out strongly in my memory from childhood as on the school librarian (?) or teacher would read to us. So I ordered it for my twin 3 year olds, as we have storytime every night. I was surprised at the minimal # of words in the actual book. A sentence or two AT Most on each page and even less on some... However the illustrations are so well done that they really illuminate the story. Probably too simple for an older child - but my younger kids love the repetition "trip trap trip trap.. whose that coming over my bridge!" I sometimes catch them repeating it at the playground where they use their imaginations to pretend one is the troll and the other a billy goat ha. This is one of their favorites. A quality classic for the collection... but be prepared for minimal words.

Jerry Pinkney at his best
I absolutely love Jerry Pinkney as a children’s book illustrator. We have almost all of his books, and my three kids pick them for bedtime reading again and again. The intricate detail of every water color illustration is stunning. Kids find new details to love with each reading. And Mr. Pinkney chooses to retell and illustrate classics, which I just love. (My all time Jerry Pinkney favorite is The Talking Eggs if you want to check that out.)This rendition of The Three Billy Goats Gruff is simply the best. There are the classic three goats “trip trapping” over the bridge. However, the three billy goats also actually pave the way for a whole herd of billy goats to be able to graze on the other side of the bridge, which is a nice adaptation. Also, the troll winds up getting eaten by a gigantic fish, which is an interesting twist to the story.Visually, this book really is Jerry Pinkney at his best. A masterpiece. If this isn’t up for a Caldecott Award, I don’t know what will be!My kindergarten son had to choose a story to memorize and tell to his whole class and this is what he chose. We have read it A LOT, and neither of us has lost interest or gotten tired of the book. And that’s saying something too!

Fabulous illustration. Soft ending
Great illustrations. The story is what I recall. The author takes liberties with the end to keep it happy, which most like.

Totally different version of Billy Goats Gruff athanasius Pictured
If you choose paperback version, the thumbnail shows woodcut illustrations from a Norwegian Artist. That is what I thought I was buying. Instead I got a very modern generically illustrated version instead. Confusing for customer

Can't Go Wrong With a Classic!
I bought this for an expectant mother as a Baby Shower gift. It's a wonderful story to share when introducing your baby to the art of reading. My boys loved it as children. This wonderful story for read aloud as you TRIP-TRAP, TRIP TRAP through the telling of the story.
