A must have for the life-long bartender
Anyone that wants to take their bartending career to the next level should start here. I always say with arts and crafts that it is best to learn the rules so you can break them intentionally. This is the first cocktail book ever written, and is a nod to a craft truly transformed by early Americans. Also, when you get that “well actually” person telling you how a drink is supposed to be made, it’s very nice to have the first written recipe and a knowledge of where that drink started and where it has gone since then, making this book an invaluable prime source of information.

Great party drinks!
Interesting recipes including for whole batches of rum and whiskey. Great recipes for party drinks and interesting to read about where the drinks came from according to Jerry Thomas.

Modern Day Bon Vivant
The contents of the book are fascinating. I can't wait to try some the the recipes as guidelines and modify to my taste. My only complaint is that the pages (and cover) look like a very poor Xerox copy. Other than that, this book is a must have for any bar owner/tender in search of the history that's makes their profession what it is today!

great book
Used to own the whole Jerry Thomas collection but over the years and countless moves they got lost or well used. Glad to see Amazon has access to the reprints as well as the original copies (which should be in a safe). These books are a great resource to everyone interested in looking into the distant past of bartenders and their mythical elixirs what we call "spirits" today. You wanna be a hit at your next party, buy the reprints study them. After all the bartenders everyones best friend.

The origins of modern cocktails
I bought this as a gift to give to someone, but I have to say when I received it, I spent a few minutes thumbing through it, and intend to buy my own copy. It appeared to me that, rather than typeset, each page was directly reproduced from the original, almost like a photocopy, but looking more like a woodcut pressing. Overall it seemed like a very faithful reproduction of a very old book of cocktail recipes.

Too hard to read print.
I guess the drinks might be wonderful. However, the way the book is printed makes it very uncomfortable to read. I felt as if I had to struggle with the presentation and I am just not willing to do that.

The one and only Jerry Thomas
Jerry Thomas is always referred to when one thinks about pre Prohibition cocktails.He was a professional bartender and created cocktails that are still in demand today. It seems that the modern cocktail has become too complicated at times. Jerry Thomas was also a showman, and preparation and presentation went hand in hand with a great cocktail. There is nothing better than using one of his recipes, then enjoying both the cocktail and the guide.
