ATS-V Steering Wheel Swap
Alright here we go.The steering wheel in the stock photo of this detail page is actually the one they made me. Bospeed crafts steering wheels from OEM wheels that they can get their hands on in China. I installed this wheel on my 2016 ATS-V Coupe. Yes I was scared to rip my steering wheel out of my car. But it was not the hardest task if you have the right tools and have the knowledge to swap a wiring harness. I am no mechanic, but I have done DIY stuff on my cars for about 10 years. From purchase to my doorstep it was about 6 weeks. They let me customize the wheel how I wanted it and I exchanged many emails with the Bospeed company. It took them a long time in China to find a 7 button ATS OEM wheel. However, in retrospect it didn't really matter how many buttons it was since I ended up using my original wiring harness and buttons anyways. The wheel they sent me was actually wired for a heated wheel which after re-crafting the entire wheel, it is a feature that will no longer function. I did not have the heating feature on my original wheel therefore needed to use my original harness and buttons. They shipped the wheel in a quality box and once it was shipped from China it took only about a week to get here (no customs fees for me).Install:-Unplugged negative terminal drivers side trunk location-Made sure steering wheel was top dead center-Let car sit for 15 minutes-Popped out airbag by sticking a small allen wrench in the holes of the side of the wheel and pulling on the top corner at the same time-Lifted up on airbag plugs with my fingers (if you have big fingers, might need a needle nose)-Pulled airbag plugs out-Unplugged main harness plug out of steering column-Used a torque wrench (it is so hard to remove the center bolt if it is a factory seal, might need a friend that works out haha) to remove the center bolt with a T50 socket on a torque wrench (I think its T50, its a large star bit)-Wheel then slides right out of the steering column like butter-Took apart the wheel Bospeed sent me and took apart my OEM wheel by removing the three allen or star bolts in with the horn springs behind it-Unplugged all harness ports and unscrewed ground wire behind the top plate that the airbag sits on-Swapped harness and buttons, used original horn springs (the 3 behind the top metal piece), used original metal piece-Put my wheel back together and got ready for the install in the car (your heart should start beating harder right about now)-Slid wheel back on steering column and plugged back in all harness ports-Put airbag back on-Put your large center bolt back on, mine had a yellow paint line on it so I was able to tighten without a torque wrench to the same spec-Re-connect battery-Turn on car (not the engine)-Leave on for 3 minutes so the car can reset (just following my manual here)-Turn off, waited 3 minutes to be super safe (long 3 minutes, got my cardio in for the day right here)-Turn on car and engine-Don't freak out, my car started throwing all kinds of lights but it was just resetting-If your car then says CAL like mine did...-I had to drive in a circle like 4 times and then it finally CALibrated the compass-Return to your house-Get a cold beer-Put your tools away-Go to sleep a happy Cadillac ownerPros:-OEM Wheel (odds are you will need to use your buttons and wiring harness)-Came with paddle shifters and didn't need to rewire these, just used the ones they sent-High quality carbon-Flat bottom is sweet-Good customer service-Didn't have to pay customs fees-Took them about a week to build the wheel once they got it-High quality leather-High quality stitching-Looks awesome!-Good customer service and communication, always kept me in the loop-Renick performance charges like 2K on their website for the same thing, haha whata joke, I guess they have to pay Newport Beach taxes hahaCons:-I asked them to remake the piece under my airbag to ensure I had the V logo. They put a thick overlay of carbon and my horn would not compress since that part became too thick, had to use my OEM trim/buttons piece and now I have no carbon there as requested :(-V logo was from an older CTS so not the newest sleeker, more low profile V logo-You dont really know what GM part you will get, odds are you will need to reuse your electrical harness, horn springs, and all the other guts of the wheel-4 weeks was a long time to find a wheel, but the wait was worth it-6 week total time to get it (car guy impatience)-Slightly out of proportion at the top of the wheel, but I get it hand laid carbon... and I think it adds a little characterThank you Bospeed!
