Worth the initial slog
If you have the patience to battle with an illogical rule book, and confusing first round, then a great game is buried underneath. The first time playing with three friends did elicit some gasps of exasperation and furious page turning ('for an explanation, see page 28'), with quite a few difficult concepts to wade through. However, after the (very long) set up, and first couple of rounds, everyone started to enjoy the game.Certainly after playing a couple of times it will undoubtedly pick up speed much quicker. A word of warning though: if you're all new to the game, then make sure you have some patient friends who are willing to give the game the time it deserves. In terms of the actual contents in the box, everything is very well packaged and comes with handy ziplock bags that make keeping everything sorted much easier. All of the pieces are high quality, but you do have to spend some time popping all the cardboard pieces out. When everything is set up it can seem daunting, but you soon get to learn what everything does. The rule book is the only thing that lets this game down. If it were easier to follow and get started, then this would easily be 5 stars. Perhaps that's just the price you pay for such a comprehensive and involving board game though.

Great Group Game, not really balanced for 4-5 players. (easily fixed with personal rules)
I love this game. I love the planning, the risk, the deal, the betrayals. The only area I think could be better is balancing the game when there inst 6 players. Right now if your 3 players the south of the map is basically disabled, you can't capture any territory down there. 4-5 player however you can capture the south, pretty easily. This is something you can easily fix with your own rules though. So don't let it put you off.

Great game - stick with it!
Word of warning - this game is not for the instant gratification generation, they will probably get bored before the first round is even complete. If you stick with this game it is absolutely brilliant. It's a game that makes you think/plan 5 or 6 turns ahead, the trouble is that the other players should all be doing the same and more often than not they will interfere with your plans! It's one of the best strategy games I've played and after on Sunday I managed to convince my boardgame novice family to play and after a couple of rounds they really got into it.I think the only downside is that the game doesn't come with storage boxes for all the pieces, I've put everything in ziploc bags for now but I'm keeping a look out for small boxes that I can put all of the card pieces into.

Complicated enough to be interesting
UPDATE i originally gave it 5 stars but after playing a couple of times nobody has suggested it again so I guess it only gets a lukewarm thumbs up.I bought it for the Game of Thrones fans in my family and played it with them. It is quite complicated and took a bit of effort to learn, but it is nowhere near the complexity of hardcore games like Descent and Fantasy Flight games. We successfully completed a game on the first go though it did turn into a long evening. The game has attractive artwork, some negotiation and co-operation although it is basically competitive, and several interesting playing features. These include competing for positions of influence which affect the game in different ways, and placing concealed bids to see who will take the punishments of fate. The interventions of fate are brutal enough to keep the game open but not so brutal as to ruin it.It is an expensive game and I can't help wondering how much of the price has gone to the TV show's marketing department.

The bidding wars make this extra fun and less predictable.
If you know the tv show you will find this extra fun, but this strategy game is not just for the fans. Amazing war strategy game with so many facets and layers of complexity. The bidding wars make this extra fun and less predictable.Lovely. The pieces are robust and the game is amazing.I particularly like the way the board can be folded. Not sure I like the holders, had to remove and buy my own. Also the second edition hasn't got a lot more than the first (if any).Additional star points for 3-4 player game play feels useless.

Complex and great strategy game
Definitely my favourite strategy game. A steep learning curve in the first game which can take a good 5 hours with a full table. It's quite unbalanced so best if the newer players take easier houses like Baratheon and Greyjoy. Saying that we've had wins from every house over many games.Expansions add more to the mix, the OOP storm of swords is the best version for 3-4 players and the upcoming mother of dragons expansion will bring a total of 8 players. Not for the faint of heart, but if you get bored of risk's simplicity you'll love this.

Complex, challenging and fun. Love it.
Well it took some setting up, and I don't usually play these kinds of strategy games but couldn't get out of this one as it needs 3 to 6 players so I was brought in as the 'token' Player 3 by my husband and son who both love this kind of stuff (my 14 year old boy bought it "for his dad" at Christmas, possibly with more than a little self interest I suspect!). Well, after floundering at the start what with all the detail, things started to fall into place and make sense and I really began to enjoy it. Our reluctant teenage daughter also joined in and turned out to be a scheming force to be reckoned with! Great fun for dark winter nights.....another marathon session soon due I think.

Great fun
My friend group have been playing GoT for roughly 2 years now and we weren't even bored of it. This expansion was quite a welcome surprise. We particularly enjoyed the new loan and vassall system. An underrated feature was the "gifting" of power tokens, players were able to hold ransom or pay someone off for not attacking them. This of course caused tension and arguments, which is what GoT is all about ;)My only negative comment was the setup stage was longer than usual (mainly because it's new and we were unfamiliar), but in the end totally worth it.
