Doctor Zhivago

Excellent Film, Excellent DVD (Blu-ray)
I have seen this movie several times ever since it came out. I consider it to be one of the best films ever made in terms of artistic quality. I also read a book and purchased the theme music a long time ago. Simply stated, it is a long, poignant story of love and tragic affairs during the period of political and social turmoil in Russia in the early 1900s. Certainly, this film is worthy of owning in a Blu-ray or better format. I've recently found this (i.e., a new one) at a reasonably good price. The Blu-ray disk played flawlessly from beginning to the end. I watched again with a family member--twice! I am completely satisfied with this purchase, and I highly recommend it. Nowadays, it is nearly impossible to find such a masterpiece.

At the 1965 Oscars, two films had 10 nominations and 5 winners each. Can you name them?
The two five Oscar winning films in 1965 were The Sound of Music and Doctor Zhivago. Need I say more?Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, takes place during the Russian Revolution and it is a love triangle some of which takes place in Moscow and everything else in Siberia. The photography is amazing and the Siberian winter senes are breathtaking, epically as I saw it as a youth in the Cinerama Dome Theater in Los Angeles shortly after its release. To this day I shiver and feel like I want to put on a parka when I watch the Siberian winter scenes, which were in fact filmed in Finland and Canada. The acting is superb and you will always remember this masterpiece. The Blue-Ray disk played on my 1080p big screen is almost as impactful as my original theater experience. I highly recommend this Blu-Ray.

Another Lean Masterpiece
Doctor Zhivago (1965) is yet another David Lean masterpiece. After the enormous success of Lawrence of Arabia, the bar was set high, and Lean delivers on a challenging project that ultimately was shot in Spain instead of Russia. When watching this film, I couldn’t even tell in the slightest that the film was shot in Spain; the amazing attention to detail in every shot is a Lean trademark, and really carries the backdrop of the film. This is a sophisticated film to look at, as well as the dialogue, yet it still moves forward, despite over three hours in running time. I initially thought the casting of Lean familiars would potentially hinder the film in terms of portraying characters of Russian descent, but they’re believable in their respective roles. Doctor Zhivago has it all: Great cinematography, directing, dialogue, and character development. It’s a sophisticated film that still has a direct feel to it. I highly recommend this blu ray, as it features pristine picture and sound quality, and has some cool special features.

Awesome picture quality, less than perfect soundtrack
This review is about the "Blu Ray" version, not about the original movie, which everyone knows is awesome. I saw it in the theater in 1965 and have never forgotten what a dramatic experience it was, both the story and breathtaking wide screen cinematic experience. The beauty of the panoramic filming and the windswept, haunting soundtrack were unforgettable. On my 60" plasma screen, this "Blu Ray" version had the same visual beauty as the original theater experience. The color, the clarity, and the depth of the cinematic feel reminded me of seeing it in the theater 50 years ago. My only reservation is that the sound quality of the "Blu Ray" DVD seemed a little thin. I have a low priced, but decent, Yamaha surround sound system and I expected a little more of a theater experience from the sound track, particularly the music.Additional note about "Blu Ray" versions of older movies: I don't really know how they are made. Do they go back and scan every frame of the original? Do they play the film version on a screen and record it with a digital camera? Certainly, they don't just digitize the VHS tape, do they? We are way beyond that quality level. How they do it matters because I'm spending a lot of money on "Blu Ray" DVD's, and I want this to be the last time I ever have to buy a particular classic. I don't want to buy these all over again when the 4K Blu Ray version comes out. Most of the "Blu Ray" classics I have bought are very high quality, and way beyond the standard definition DVD's that I have of the same movie. I have been impressed with the "Blu Ray" versions of Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lawrence of Arabia, and others. But, I'm not sure the lesser know classics have received the same attention to detail. I would like to know that they meet some standard of quality before buying them. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Great Movie! Powerful... Historic...
One of the best movies ever made... not just for the romantic love story... but a great lesson in Russian history... but more so... clearly shows what happens in a socialist society.... and the re-distribution of wealth and how it will destroy a once great country... Beautiful scenery... Omar Sharif and Julie Christie are both wonderful... The winter scenes make you cold just watching them!

All time classic love story set in revolutionary Russia
All time classic love story set in revolutionary Russia. A timeless masterful piece of writing and film making. Long to be revered and never to be forgotten. A must see for a low action movie without any special effects that still says a lot even though it is a three hour epic!10/10+

Extraordinaria obra maestra

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO BLU RAY
This review is for the WARNER HOME ENT BLU RAY 45th Anniversary. How many viewers have actually read Pasternak's novel? I tried some 40 odd years ago and to my shame (perhaps) gave up halfway through. So my enjoyment is thanks to assorted geniuses in their field - Director David Lean, screenplay by Robert bolt - what a task he had!, Photographer Freddie Young, and by no means least, composer Maurice Jara. "Lara's theme" remains one of the most haunting pieces of film music I have ever heard. Then there is the casting...Every part from the stars to the smallest bit seems to have been so carefully chosen - did Eric Chitty ever have such a role in such a film? Rod Steiger resists any tempation to overact and is so right for Komarovsky - charming and ruthless. I won't go into the whole cast, but concentrate on Julie Christie and "Cairo Fred" Sharif. Was there ever a more beautiful actress than Christie in her prime (and now). She just hypnotises me when she is on screen, and the perfect match- perhaps not everyone's choice - Omar made the good Dr his very own. You truly care for them both, which doesn't always happen in today's cinema. Highlights can be spoilers, but the Cavalry charge on the demonstraters, the train ride to the Urals, Strelnikov's appearence ion his train, the scenes in the Urals, and surely not a dry eye in the house at Rita Tushingham's last word to Alec Guiness. I am sure you have guessed that I love all 200 minutes of this one, so much so I see I have not mentioned the quality of the BLU Ray - It really is excellent and an upgrade to the very good anyway DVD 2 disc special of 2007. Good subtitles, some different extras. But I did find the sound a bit tinny, but that could be my TV/Blu Ray player. At this current price you can't go wrong.
