The rod consists of very fine grooves, with larger grooves spread across the steel. During regular use to keep you knife edge straight and sharp, and to remove small burs, you can lightly run your knife across. If you have larger burs, then the larger grooves will help remove those. If you knife edge has a little extra wear, or you have a small damaged area, you can apply a little more pressure, and the larger grooves will help repair and sharpen enough to keep you going until you can take the blade to a stone or sharpening machine. This is a very popular steel and receive very good feedback from Amazon and from our webstore where we sell most of these, mostly because we are able to run a lower price, because we don't have to pay the Amazon commission and fees.
