Blue Bloods: The Seventh Season

Great Series (Perhaps One Of The Best)...But Something Is Missing In Season 7
My wife and I were hooked on Blue Bloods from Season 1 Episode 1.We loved the family dynamic, all of the great Tom Selleck looks and lines, the energy and sass from Donnie Wahlberg, etc. Blue Bloods is a remarkable show. But what we were especially drawn to were the family meals - all of which were blatantly Catholic. The full nine yards. Prayers. Jesus' name. God talk. Signs of the cross, etc. This was an undeniably Irish Catholic family. All of that is gone in Season 7. They still have family meals. But they're not the same family at those meals. If memory serves, not one prayer was spoken at the dinner table in Season 7. The spiritual side of this family is missing. In its place are more cop-like stories, more blood and guts, and chases and shootings. But the glue that held this family together - the strong spirituality from their Catholic faith - is gone.Don't get me wrong. I'm not Catholic. But I know a bold, unique TV family when I see one. Their prayers around the dinner table set that family - and this show - apart from all others.I miss that side of the Reagan family. I thought it was important, and added much to who they are as people.Another aspect to this season that I find frustrating is the relationship between Office Eddie Janko and Officer Jamie Reagon. If there's one thing that can kill a show faster than keeping two people apart through faux drama, I don't know what it is. That was what ended the TV series Castle. The faux drama, the back-and-forth, on/off aspect of the relationship between Richard Castle and Detective Kate Beckett could only be sustained so long. Sloppy writing and really bad plot choices made Castle unwatchable. The writers could write flirtatious. But they couldn't write for a couple. And when Castle and Beckett became a couple, the show really got unwatchable.I'm afraid that's going to happen with Jamie and Eddie. The flirtatiousness has been going on from the get-go. It's obvious Eddie Janko (played by Vanessa Ray) is incandescent. She lights up the screen, nearly steals every scene. She and Jamie Reagan (played by Will Estes) have a chemistry I haven't seen in years, perhaps decades. They need to get together. It's way past the point of no return. If they don't get together, I'm afraid viewers will be turned off in the same way they were when Castle and Beckett couldn't get together and stay together. The plots are getting a bit tired in Season 7. The characters are becoming a bit more like caricatures than characters, especially in the early episodes of Season 7. This season got off to a rough start.I think Season 8 is going to depend on (a) bringing back the family's spiritual faith, (b) getting Eddie and Jamie together, and (c) finding fresh ways to engage the regular characters, or find new stories to explore with the less-known characters.Blue Bloods is our favorite series. We own all the DVDs to date, have purchased and download all episodes of Season 7 to date, and we re-watch everything (starting with Season 1, Episode 1) every couple of months. So we're keenly aware of what gives this show its magic. And we're worried it's slipping away.Your mileage may vary.

Still Good But Not As Good As Before
I still love this show, but it has definitely changed in the 7th season. What happened to the usual ending at the Sunday family dinner table when they prayed before their meal? The meal is now usually in the middle of the episode, and we see them all seated and chatting (as usual) but we don't see the prayer any more. I just appreciated that this show used to have that as a family tradition, but it has now succumbed to being more secular. Also, the language has deteriorated a bit. Some of the story lines in this season seemed a little out of character... like one episode where the Captain (Frank) is considering causing someone to leave the police academy because the student's dad was a cop killed on duty. It just didn't seem to fit Frank's personality. He is more pragmatic than that normally in my opinion. There are a few other minor things like that. I still like it and will watch season 8, but I don't LOVE it like I did before.

One of the best just keeps on running at that high level of greatness
Six stars for this series, right back from series one, if that was allowed. We've purchased every season, and will continue to do so. The 7th season ramps up the verbal sparing within the family Sunday dining scenes. The youngest "children" of the cop family of four generations have aged enough to have some jabbing lines of their own. Witty, and often funny, always thought provoking. I missed the prayer, they seemed to have stopped doing a prayer. Perhaps a political correction. The seventh series really ramps up the emotion among the family. The cops get involved personally. Repeatedly. Same goes for the attorney daughter. The family lives continue to interplay during "office hours" as well as in their personal lives. There's a kiss not to be missed, who?, I'll not tell. It can't be said this is the best series yet, because they have all been outstanding. Series seven simply continues the fast action, exciting plots, and excellent writing of the lives of this NYC family. Although so much happens in each episode, viewers know it is beyond normalcy, but the actors in this series make it seem realistic. And the brilliant performances is something the whole family can watch together. That's refreshing.

What's not to like?
Blue Bloods season 7 doesn't disappoint. Season 7 has all the elements that makes it solid. Family, family and family. The writers come up with the challenges and we get to see how this family works through it. Well done. It keeps me coming back with the fresh scripts and superb cast.

Anything with Tom has to be good, right
Anything with Tom has to be good, right? Well, I watched all of this that was available, and still looked for more. I'm not ordinarily the type to like police stories. That should tell you something!

Our favorite weekly show
Our favorite weekly show! We love all the characters, especially Jamie, and the way each show is a fresh new story and the value of family that is played out, in a realistic way with their ups and downs.

This is the BEST show ever
This is the BEST show ever...I mean EVER. I am sure it will eventually end, but I am praying it will be a few seasons from now. I DO wish there were more Dinner scenes and it is VERY UNFORTUNATE that the LEFT MEDIA has succeeded in getting rid of PRAYER, but the show is still AWESOME and those of us that are BELIEVERS know that this is just another "signal" for US to work harder spreading HIS WORD.

Great
This is a great show. I love the action, the interaction among the family, and the way they approach sensitive, current issues. The show is very relevant. Plus, those Reagan men are easy on the eyes. :-)

ALL ON FINE FORM WITH MUCH TO THINK ABOUT
Another impressive season as the law-connected members of New York's Catholic Reagan family face troubling challenges - as ever, so much to discuss at their Sunday dinner reunions. How much longer can Commissioner Frank keep his job - devious politicians he stands up to anxious he be replaced? Meanwhile, although well over thirty thousand men under his command, he seems held responsible for any bent cop or any member of the force's split second error of judgment when on duty. His somewhat volatile son, detective Danny, has much to contend with - not least being under investigation for shooting dead an unarmed serial killer. Did sister, the DA office's Erin, cause the wrong man to be jailed ten years earlier? Does brother Jamie become unwisely involved with some of the problems of people he encounters on patrol?Yes, much for them to discuss and for viewers to think about. Allegations of racism in the force is a major concern. What, though, if black communities house the most lawbreakers? Under the spotlight are neighbourhoods intimidated by teen gangs, shopkeepers at the mercy of protection racketeers. What about highly organized drug cartels? So much to consider. Included? The sanctity of confession made to a priest. Age discrimination in the force. Assisted suicide. A man claiming diplomatic immunity, his little boy a mass of bruises. No way can all these issues be satisfactorily settled, but some of them are dealt with in ways that uplift.Fine scripts. Great cast in its element. Good to see too increasing involvement of certain members like Frank's aides Gareth and Sid, the DA's Anthony.Powerful fare with much to disturb or to hearten. Very much at the show's centre remain the Reagans. Differences may abound but all concerned are strengthened by their faith and family loyalty.22 episodes. Bonuses include deleted scenes, cast reactions to issues raised and how their characters are developing.Season 7 contains the show's 150th episode, celebrations justified that the series is still going strong with ratings so high.

Still brilliant but more emotional
I watched this series immediately following on from series six. The format is still there but there is more emotion. Emotion in the stories which pulls at the heart strings and also in the lives of the regular actors. Some of this emotion is very hard and cruel - people are not as polite or as helpful as they might be and I found the story about the Russians particularly distasteful. However all the stories have been carefully worked out to show a complete range within the series and the last story - which is a tough one - ends up with a very sincere bonding of the family round the dinner table ending the series on a positive note. With all this the acting is still very complete - the production standards as good as ever. It was nice to see Tom Selleck doing more location work, appearing in far more places than in previous series. The amazing Stacey Keach gives a wonderful performance - of course. His scenes with Tom Selleck set in a huge cathedral are superb. Yes, this series is the same but the Reagan's lives are changing as the world they live in is changing. Once again - absolutely excellent.
