Brilliant wee light!
Ever since I put up my 16x9ft wooden garage/workshop last year I've been pondering over the best way to illuminate it - there's no convenient way of getting mains electricity to the garage which rules out that possibility, so I was left with the options of battery powered or solar-powered lighting. I had grand plans initially to install a solar powered system with all the bells and whistles, but since I only occasionally go out to the garage in the evening when it's dark outside it made that option seem absurdly excessive, so I decided to go for something a touch more economical and bought this wee solar kit.>>> INITIAL IMPRESSIONSI have to admit that I had some reservations when I first opened the box as the actual light seemed a bit cheap and nasty, but since it was only to be used in my garage I decided to forge onwards with its installation.>>>WHAT'S IN THE BOX?In the box, you'll find a small solar panel with a long(ish) 5m cable, the actual lighting unit, four screws and rawl plugs and a single page of (rather rubbish) instructions.>>> INSTALLATIONThe actual installation was as simple as it gets; first of all I had to figure out where to place the solar panel and how far the 5m cable would stretch, but after a quick play it became clear that I could place the panel above the doorway of the garage and the light on the far wall facing me as I entered it - just as I hoped it would work. I had to then drill a hole using a large-ish 1cm drill bit to allow me to pass the connector and the cable for the solar panel through the bulkhead and internal cavity of the garage and run it to the far opposite wall. Putting up the actual light was a simple case of popping the two provided screws into the far wall of my garage and hooking the light onto the screwheads - there's even a handy guide on the back of the light telling you how far apart you need to place the screws, which is a nice little touch. Finally, I had to tidy up the cable which was really simple as it could be pushed neatly between the main beams running across the centre of my garage roof.>>> IS IT WORKING?!Of course, the final thing I had to do was to check that the thing was actually working - and it was at this point where I encountered a problem. I noticed that the lights worked fine when the solar panel was disconnected, but that they turned off the second that I plugged it back in. The single sheet of instructions gave no clues as to how the lights actually functioned so I shrugged and thought that perhaps the batteries needed to be charged some more via the panel before it started working - since it was a sunny day I left the garage and decided to pop back the next morning....But there was no difference. The second I unplugged the solar panel from the unit again, the lights come on as before! Going from what I'd read in another another Amazon review of the unit, I came to the unfortunate conclusion that it must've been faulty, so I grudgingly pulled it all down, popped it back into the box and took it into the house. And it was at this point where a 'EUREKA' moment hit me. I was demonstrating to my other half (in my hallway, where there is no sunlight) why I thought the light wasn't working and plugged the solar panel into it, fully expecting it to go out - but guess what? It stayed on!It became crystal clear at this point that the light will ONLY come on when it detects no current coming into it from the solar panel, ergo it will only turn on when it's dark outside! How clever! How bleedin' obvious! What an idiot! In my defense however, this is not explained at all in the single sheet of (rather rubbish) instructions so I didn't feel too bad.So out I went to the garage once more and put the solar panel and light back up again!>>> HOW BRIGHT IS IT?If you take a gander at the picture below, you'll see that the light is surprisingly bright - definitely good enough for seeing where I'm going and finding things when it's dark outside.>>> HOW GOOD IS IT AT DETECTING MOVEMENT?The IR sensor is really sensitive and effective at detecting me the moment I open the garage door, too - so I'm actually really impressed with it. There's also controls to adjust the maximum distance at which it detects movement and the sensitivity of it.>>> HOW LONG DO THE LIGHTS STAY ON FOR?Ah, now I can't actually answer this one, shouty question-asking writing. The most time I've spent out in the garage with the lights on is about 15 minutes, but they stayed bright and steady for the full time. I'd imagine that they'd go on for a good 3-4 hours though. One thing to consider before buying them is whether you want them to stay on constantly for more than a minute - their maximum 'on' time. If you're planning on sitting still for a good length of time they will go off if they don't detect movement, which could end up rather annoying as you'll need to jostle about to get them to turn back on again. All in all, I'd definitely recommend this product.

Value for money
Excellent value for money and the light is quite bright. Would buy again.

Bright and easy to install
I have bought SPV lights before so I knew this was going to be a good light. A tad bigger than I had imagined but not a problem. Bright and easy to set up with the detection and distance. The solar panel being seperate is great because it could be mounted at a brighter spot as the light itself was for a recessed door that was never going to get sunshine. It's perfect.

Adequate, but cheap for a reason!
Bought 5 of these items, they are cheap to purchase compared to other lights on Amazon, and they are cheap for a reason. 1 of the lights is faulty and is on and off all of the time until its power is depleted, the other 4 are fine. The light they give off is adequate, however they are side by side with some similar lights I purchased from ALDI over the summer which were a few pounds more expensive and are far more powerful and brighter, but you get what you pay for and they are adequate for the job of lighting up my garden area when the dog goes out into the garden in the dark. They hook onto my fence using two screw heads that are tightened until the unit feels secure enough not to be dislodged by the wind, however this is also tight enough to activate the on/off switch which for some reason is at the back of the unit and with the plastic weather seal cover is pressed when you fit the unit to the fence, so its a bit of a balancing act to get it right with the poor design. The lamps can not be set to point low as they foul on the light body so that is an issue for me as I wanted to direct the lighted area downwards, but this was solved by packing the rear of the light with wedge shaped packers to tilt the lamp body. Another 1" of height on the posts that the light units were fitted to would have solved this issue, so poor design again. So all in all you get what you pay for, hence these are adequate, but not great.

Everything works but can't point down enough due to design thus it blinds your eyes unless installed below knee level
Everything works as they should: PIR works fine, panel charges in day light (grey days too, it seems). There is light sensitivity and duration (how long it stays on) adjusting dials. Overall a useful little gadget for a dark walkway. It is not too bright like others have mentioned, but is no bother if the purpose is to see a path to walk by.My biggest complaint is that though the two lights are on swival heads that are suppose to turn all directions, the neck is too short or light body too fat, so you can't really point it downward much. Initially I installed it slightly above head thinking it will shine down to light a dark corne between my house and garage, all it did was dazzling straight into and thus blinding my eyes, no matter how I turned them. I had to move it below knee level, even so it still dazzles a little bit. The way the hang holes are in the back of the batteries unit, there is no way you can hang it any other way, e.g. up side down, to solve this problem. So with a knee high restriction, it's more like one of those deck solar lights on a garden spike, with the benefit of PIR and flexible location of solar panel, not really an overhead security light.
