A great all-rounder L series lens for EF camera bodies
I'd already had an original MkI version of this lens for 15 years and it was a fabulous lens, my most often used lens on several generations of Canon 5D body. I'd never really felt the need to trade up to this MkII version as it's normally a lot of money (£1,440) but when this deal came up just before Christmas for it at just £623 I couldn't resist, especially as I got over £200 trade-in price from a camera shop for my 15 year old MkI lens! While Canon are moving on to the mirrorless RF line of camera bodies and lenses, they are very expensive at the same level of the previous generation of EF bodies and lenses. If you have a late model EF body (and good condition 5D MkIV bodies can be found quite cheaply second hand) then I can highly recommend this lens. It's very sharp, wonderful colour and contrast, not too much barrel or pin-cushion distortion (for a super-zoom) and very low chromatic aberration. These can be improved further as the lens provides optimisation data to the body and so can be corrected in body (by a 5D MkIV) or Canon DP Pro software. The constant f/4 aperture across the whole zoom range has always been a good compromise betwen brightness and flexibility (the f/2.8 zooms are a lot bigger, heavier, and more expensive). This MkII lens is slightly bigger (longer) and heavier than the MkI, making the combo of the lens and the 5D MkIV body very heavy (especially for travel photogrphy) but at least you'll get a workout while walking! I can't say I've noticed much image quality improvement over the MkI (as it was originally so good), but on paper the MkII is better (different lens groups and more iris blades). What I did notice is the more powerful image stabilisation 4 stops on the MkII vs only 2.5 stops on the MkI and the newer IS is also quieter (less clicking and whirring noise), which will be important when recording video. It also has a smooth (stepless?) iris mode for video exposure whereas the MkI had the usual f/stop steps that made it useless for video (you had to lock the exposure for a take to avoid stepped exposure or live with the steps). The MkII has a zoom lock to stop the lens extending by itself when closed which is a nice addition but I never really had a problem with this happening on the MkI. Focussing is fast, accurate and very quiet but no faster or quieter than the MkI was. If you don't already have one of these lenses for your EF body, it's definitely worth having, even at the full price. If you have a MkI already, I'd say it's not worth the upgrade at anything like full price, but at the 57% discount that they were doing it for and the trade-in price I got on my MkI, it was a no-brainer to upgrade and I'm delighted. It came as completlely brand new, with the new style lens cap, hood and carry bag and had a EU and UK warranty card (important as Canon can be a bit funny about servicing "grey import" lenses in the UK.

Excellent lens for everyday use
This lens is super sharp and lives on my camera 90% of the time. Brilliant for travelling light with my full frame Canon 6D. If there was one lens I could not do without then this would be it.

While quite bulky and heavy, this is my primary / default lens now. Fast autofocus and very good image stabilization to deliver sharp pictures. It performs really well and is suitable for most situations. The maximum aperture at F4 through its whole focal range helps in low light while it also produces a nice bookeh at larger focal lengths. For those interested on this lens, be mindful of the crop factor on APS-C camera bodies - at its wider angle of view this will not get as much scene in the picture in comparison to kit-lenses starting at 18mm. In order to deliver the highest picture quality this is premium glass and build but there is a compromise in focal range: not that wider angle, not that much zoom.
