dont buy it , its usless the blades broke eight times in two days. I gave it away to a bloke I do not like. go for De WALT or CLARKE, they are much more substantial

does it kake a half inch blade

It might take a 1/2" blade, but I have only used the standard size. The one supplied is good for wood, but wore out instantly when used on metal. I bought new blades and now it cuts very well, Using a 1/2 blade would make it difficult cutting corners and one might have to modify the guide.

I have not yet used the machine but I would suggest no, I would imagine you would need a different blade for cutting metal as the teeth on the blade supplied do not look fine enough to cut metal.

Will it cut 5mm thick steel flat? Providing I use a metal cutting blade?

I don't see why not as long as you take it slow I have cut through a 2 inch square block of with no problems.
