Mad Hatter
Kay Bojesen was a Danish designer who loved wood and, in the 1930s he started to design wooden figures, starting with a dog and adding to the collection over two decades until by the 1950s he had created a diverse family of animals including a monkey, hippopotamus (used as a pencil holder by the designer) and bear. His aim was to create something that would feel good to hold and be a playful representation of the animal rather than an exact match.I have the rabbit, which is made from untreated white oak and, according to the product information, he was born in 1957.The oak is beautifully turned, smooth and interesting and the rabbit's limbs and head can be moved through one plane so he can be posed in various positions, which really adds to the interest. My rabbit has turned up in all manner of places around the house, peeping out from behind a clock, balanced precariously on one foot, `bunny-like' on all fours, or even tucked up in bed. Interest is certainly maintained due to the fact he can be posed in so many ways; he won't just melt into the background. He has even turned up on my desk as a temporary pen-holder.The rabbit is beautifully gift boxed, nestled within shredded paper and with care instructions warning to keep him out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.A delightful gift for children and adults alike and something that just makes people smile.
