Window on another world
A high quality product, and great value for money. Easy to assemble, and the different elements fit together security so nothing moves accidentally once it is set up. The software is user friendly (I’m a Mac user). I love the fact I can take photos, video or time lapse, and add notes/comments to the photos, indicate and label structures, etc. Unlike the conventional microscope where the only means of recording what you see is to draw it or preserve the specimen and mount it on a slide, the digital photos can be kept for future reference and study. Seeing the images on the computer screen adds a whole new dimension too. Very different to squinting down a tube on a conventional microscope, and a lot more comfortable too if using the microscope for extended periods of time. I like the fact the microscope can be used independently of the base, making it possible to examine items that (for whatever reason) it isn’t possible to place on the base plate, although the images may not be as clear as a very steady hand is required. A brilliant microscope for anyone of any age, scientifically minded or not. I am no scientist, but have always been fascinated by the beauty and intrigue of the microscopic world. This microscope is a very affordable, wonderfully clear window on to that world. Many years on from my school days I am one again finding myself having fun exploring the very tiny things we don't usually get to see everyday. I still have a collection of prepared slides my parents bought for me almost 40 years ago, so seeing these again - and in such amazing detail and clarity - is a real treat.

Decent quality for the price
As a cheap microscope it's pretty good. The image quality isn't bad - but don't look too carefully, or you'll see loads of black dots spread around the image, which is just because cameras at this price range aren't usually that good. That said, for the price it does give some good images with decent colour balance. The stand is also a nice addition and allows the camera to be easily raised/lowered to get the focus right. Don't expect too much - but you'll probably have a lot of fun with this.

Sample pics & scale.
Lots of people have already given you pictures of the microscope, and its specifications. I didn't want to repeat all of that information yet again, instead I wanted to show you what the PICTURE QUALITY is like... First off though - why is this microscope more expensive than other 300x microscopes? 1: The stand it comes with is firm and serves its purpose well. 2: The camera can't send 5 MP video to the computer fast enough using USB 2. To get around this, the camera hardware actually encodes/compresses the image to MPEG before going through the USB cable to the PC. This not only means 5 MP video is possible, but the preview display for images and video streams smoothly at 15 frames a second. For my images I used "Micam" (google it to download) - it's a FREE Microscope program written by a scientist with video streaming, picture taking, measuring, and supports more than one microscope. It also combines several pictures together to make a higher quality snapshot, with less noise than a single image. It can sharpen the image, and lets you select the Microscopes-transmitted-to-computer resolution, brightness, contrast, gamma, and so on, as well as video encoding (quality Vs video size) Here's THE MOST IMPORTANT part - the images... 1: A £10 note in 3 pictures (legal) - using the highest 5MP resolution, WITHOUT sharpening. The first image shows where the zoomed area will be, just below the queens head, on the very first swirl on the left. (it wasn't taken by the camera) The second image is magnification of the swirl at 20x using the microscope, again without sharpening. You can clearly see the banknote fibres, and surprisingly the micro-printed text that makes up the swirl we saw in the first picture! The MM scale is accurate. The final banknote image shows the start of the swirl magnified at 300x, with no sharpening. Check out the quality - VERY good for a microscope, with little blurring or chromatic aberration (color change/smearing) at the corners. You can clearly see the detail in the 0.23mm letter 'E', and the fibres it is printed on. ----------------- Next is a pen end in two pictures, 20x and 300x. Here you can see a problem inherent in almost ALL microscopes - very narrow depth of field. In the 300x image, you can see how the closer parts of the pen tip are blurred, you only get around 1mm to 1.5mm front to back of focus at such high resolutions. Again though - the image is clear and not smeared or distorted. Next up is a finger at 20x and 300x - at 20x you can clearly see the fingerprint, which appears so large! The 300x shows a SINGLE bar of the fingerprint, and a sweat gland releasing sweat... amazing imagery. Finally is a head hair imaged at 300x... you can see dirt, and also the lighting shows the curve of the hair. Thanks to the calibration sheet that came with the microscope, we can measure the hair accurately at 0.29mm I'm really happy with the camera - it performs better than I expected. I hope you find my images useful.

Not a particularly useful piece of kit
This was bought as a Christmas gift for my daughter. Whilst easy to set up - although you nèed to search for the software online as the included CD is fairly useless foe most devices these days - the results are disappointing. Poor magnification is my biggest issue. I think my Samsung phone get a better quality pictures. Difficult to use and limited functionality. No zoom available it seems. So all in all a disappointing purchase that will likely remain in its box.
