Pockets are large enough for a cell phone and keys. There is no velcro at top to close. You could buy some of those velcro dots if you needed it to close.

what is the material made of?

It’s supposed to be cotton but honestly it’s very thick and is a little bit itchy. We live in Florida so that may make a big difference but the shirt is way too thick for my husband to be comfortable in outside.
