I have several of these and they last about 5-6 years an work very well.

After trying to keep deer out of a relatively large garden area, I thought I would try an electric fence, a solar-powered option. I've tried many things, from motion detection lights, motion detection sirens, smelly stuff, a 10-foot fence, Irish soap, and a couple of other finds - the deer always ended up in the garden. After much research, I went with this unit. I set up a 4-foot 3D fence, ran electric wires, ground rod, etc. when I set up (my first electric fence BTW). Deer showed up the first night I set up, from the looks of the dirt displacement, a couple appeared to have touched the electric fence with zero damage to the fence. They have yet to come back. I'm super happy with this item, going on 3 weeks, and no deer is amazing. Now I look forward to enjoying gardening on a larger scale without feeding all the deer in the county. Easy to set up and install, just follow the instructions. I did the 5-day solar charge before setting up per instructions. My fence tester shows 8 at the farthest point, couldn't be happier.

After receiving my new Parmak solar 12 fence charger, I followed instructions before installing it. For a test run, I was going to replace one of my existing Parmak solar 12 units currently in operation. I have owned two Parmak solar 12s for the last four years and have been satisfied with their performance. I was surprised the new charger had only a 4.2 kv output on the fence line. My old Parmak solar 12 would read 7.2 kv. Same fence line, same ground. I went to another fence line set up with the other old Parmak solar 12, Same result. I then contacted the service department which suggested I should send the unit back to them. After three weeks, the fence charger was returned and I re-tried on different fences that had existing chargers. All tests had the same disappointing result - low voltage output tested with two different digital readout fence testers. I again contacted the service department. They suggested exchanging the solar 12 unit. 3 weeks later the new replacement arrived, and... after extensive testing in the field and on the bench.... SAME result. Low voltage output!!! I called the service department again; only then did they inform me that the electronics had been updated about a year ago and there was nothing they could do me. I then sat down and wrote an extensive letter to the President of Parker McCrory Mfg. Co. detailing my experience to which I have NOT received a response. This new Parmak solar 12 is not like the older units. What a waste of time and money for everyone!!! Since there are no returns, now all I have is a dust collector in my shed.

This charger was recommended by UVA in their how-to papers as a means of discouraging black bears from destroying bee yards. I can attest that it in fact does discourage black bears which have left my hives in peace the last two years. Amazon delivered the unit very quickly, the battery was pre-charged which ultimately saved the remnants of my yard from Yogi and Boo-boo.It has operated flawlessly for two years, it is able to hold charge from March thru December, and with a spare battery, I am able to bridge any gaps in charge. Batteries charge very easily. And last a long time in the unit when it gets shaded. After just under two years of operation, the charger stopped working, but the manufacturer stood behind the charger and fixed it for free. They returned the charger within a week. It was excellent service. There is a two year warranty, very generous given all the stuff that can happen. They also apparently service outside of warranty. Basically, this could be the last charger you own. Very pleased with quality, support, warranty, and operation. Excellent, excellent product.

LOVE this! We needed a solar charger that we could use on our pasture since we don't have electricity run to our barn yet - this fit the bill!We ran 3 strands of Electrobraid poly rope on capped t-posts and grounded the EB using the recommended 3 copper rods and I couldn't be happier. My horses won't even get close to the fence.I did sit the charger outside for 3-4 days prior to using it - used my phone's compass to ensure it was pointing due south and I've not had an issue at all. It holds a charge VERY well, recharges well and does everything we need it to do! So glad I went ahead and "bit the bullet" and got a really nice solar charger!I also recommend theParker Mccrory 00910 Anti-Theft Mounting Bracket if you are planning to mount on a t-post like we did.Super happy with this purchase!!!UPDATE: 12/5/2016 - This charger is just amazing! It is still registering strong and my horses have a great respect for the fence. About to put up another fence and will most likely use this same model again. Why pay for electricity when this will do the job? We are super pleased.

I've used a few different chargers over the years and decided to give this a try. I figured the needle on the front was more of a gimmick than anything. I was definitely wrong. I checked the charger and saw the needle near the red. I checked the fence only to find a tree had fallen across it and was reducing the charge. I wouldn't have known a tree was down for a while, but thanks to this charger, I could tell right away!The one problem I have is with the metal casing. Even with wires not touching it, it seems like the casing always carries a charge. So if you touch the metal at all, you'll get a decent shock. It also meant I couldn't just set this unit on the ground for ease of use during rotational grazing. Not sure if it's made like that or something inside is wired wrong, but other than that, works perfectly. Easy fix is to just not touch it while it's on.

This is heavy, powerful, and well built. The single issue I've had, my fault, not being used to solar panel, after several days of freezing blizzard, I noticed it was not charging. An OH YEAH moment, wipe snow off panel!

Seems to work well , animals are staying where they are supposed too
