Great tool.
I love this, it's excellent value and does some neat things. It comes in a nice little briefcase - about A5 notebook in size, and 3 inches thick. Inside there is good foam padding.Inside the case is the guage, some ultrasound gel, the cable, an extra reference block and the instruction manual. There are no batteries supplied. The yellow bit around the guage is a removable rubber snug fitting case. The manual is the usual poorly translated chinese - version so you have to work it out for yourself at times. My advice is to start measuring things you know, and when you get the results you are expecting, you are probably doing the right thing.I was baffled as to why the device itself comes with a separate reference block of steel for calibration as it has one built in - that silver circle at the bottom. To callibrate, you press the CAL button, and put the sensor on the block, and when it says "4.0mm", all is good.I was using this to test whether some coins were silver or not. The theory is - if you measure the thickness of the coin with callipers, then measure the thickness with this, and the two measurements are the same, then you have a tick in the box as the speed of sound is quite specific to particular materials. If you combine this with a magnet test and a specific gravity test, it's quite a powerful trinity of tests. It also has a different mode of operating which is quite useful. In this, you measure a block of the material, then input the thickness, then it tells you the speed of sound in that block.Any issues? Aside from the translation of the manual, I would have liked two digits after the decimal point. Also, the minimum thickness it can measure is 1.2mm of steel (although this varies if the speed of sound is lower/higher). It might struggle on some thinner coins depending on what they are made from and perhaps having a minimum of 0.5mm would be better - but hey, this is a very affordable gauge. On a practical level, if you are using this to validate speed of sound, you need to measure the thickness accurately at the point of test. For coins - the thickness in the centre is often different to the edge, so vernier callipers are challenged and a micrometer is more useful. Measuring at the very edge of an item (the rim of a coin) seems to be a bit of a dark art. I have settled on measuring with a micrometer in the centre. If you know the speed of sound for your material and you know the material, this is of course, not a concern. The manual includes a lot of speeds of sounds - but these will be approximations. In my opinion, you should test a reference piece for each material as different alloys will have different speeds of sound.

Great Value, works well
This is great value, works well and accurate enough for checking pipes to see what wall thickness they are. Used it on mild steel sch 40 and 80 and stainless steel, 1.9 - 9.52 mm and 2” up. Worked fine on everything.

The 'good read' indicator is difficult to see in poor light. But when it works it's very useful
A little intermittent on non-flat surfaces which makes it frustrating to use in awkward places. The 'good read' indicator is difficult to see in poor light. But when it works it's very useful.

Great unit performed perfectly
Bought this to do a hull thickness survey on a canal narrowboat and it worked perfectly. I did buy some extra gel in the same order and was glad I did as we did a lot of measurements

and i'm really glad i did
I bought this to test an old compressor cylinder, and i'm really glad i did. It confirmed the correct thickness all over the tank, except in the area i hypothesised would be corroded, which read as 1.5 mm (insufficient) - could have saved my life (or at least a limb!) - great value.
