The Poetic Edda

Deeply flawed formatting - free would be too much
First of all, the picture and title are for Volume 2 of the Dronke translation, but the actual product is the single-volume Bellows translation. Misleading, to say the least. The Kindle edition of this book is deeply flawed. The first four pages and the cover image are missing completely (along with many others), and formatting is not synced with presented pages (headers and footnotes appearing in the middle of paragraphs, among other problems). The text is also littered with typos and other formatting errors. Using Kindle's "go to" function to jump to the beginning throws the reader somewhere into the depths of the text; likewise, trying to go to a specified page (1 or any other) brings up some random location. It feels as though this e-book was thrown together by someone at the end of their workday shift, and no one ever bothered to see whether it came out the way it was supposed to.

Difficult to Read
The Kindle version of this book is nearly impossible to read. The poems and footnotes are all mashed together so that you cannot read the text without also having to read the footnotes. Each stanza of the text is numbered, and then each footnotes is also numbered, but everything is in the same type or font, so you can't tell them apart until you start reading them. It looks like this.1. (poetry)2. (poetry)1. (footnote)3. (poetry)2. (footnote)It's really terrible, and it pulls you right out of the beautiful language ans stories. They could have at least put the foot notes in parenthesis or used a different font, but it'll all the same. This translation is awesome, but buy a different copy of it.

If you're interested in Norse Mythology, or interested in heathenry
I found it to easy quick to read that would benefit from rereading to really grasp the ancient text. Bellows translation is excellent.

Very Boring
Not the text itself that is boring but I wish he gave the English liens aside to the Old Norse, also the intro and notes seem biased and the material isn't organized very well.

Four Stars
Best translation available. THE place to start with Norse Mythology.

Enjoyable, but incomplete
I bought this copy of Bellows' translation assuming it was simply a cheaper reprint of his work. The introductions to the individual poems are helpful and interesting, however all explanatory notes, bibliographic references, pronunciation guides etc. are missing. Especially since he refers to his notes in the introductions it would have been nice to have these for further information and context. The translations themselves are wonderful and make for enjoyable reading. I just wish I'd spent the money on the complete printing.

Readable
Readable. I would look up what's said in the notes because sometimes they are putting forward a disputed idea as fact.

Very good
Very good. Very "traditional" compared to some newer "modernly" translated versions.
