Great textbook and reference for ASE G1 Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair category exam
Rob Thompson's Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair is a great textbook to prepare for the ASE G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair certification exam. I'm studying for the G1 exam and find it precise to the point, torough in coverage within the scope of the exam and what an entry level technician should master to succeed in Automotive Service.By no means will you learn how to rebuild an engine or a transmission here, but as to the maintenance and light repair, you get focused training on the specifics of ASE G1 AMLR category.Basicly it covers bumper-to-bumber inspections, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical system, engine systems, basic engine performance, basic transmission, drivetrains and axles service, basic Air Conditioning service and a chapter on Preventive Maintenance, Fluid Service and so on.This book has its place as Preventive Maintenance, Inspections and Light Repair, that is it's scope and prepares well on such competencies, so don't rule it out. There are other Autmomtive Technology books with a deeper and broader scope, but for AMLR, here you have it in one book organized.Rob Thompson co-authors with Jack Erjavec the textbook Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach, now on its 7th edition, which provides full coverage of Automotive Technology competencies on all vehicle systems thoroughly. For us, technicians starting out and wanting to master the G1 AMLR category, which provides a lot of work to keep you busy in the shop, this is a great book to study from, learn it well and you will be a competent technician, then you can move up into mayor systems repair on automotive.Add it to your automotive bookshelf, study it, learn it, and make a career on it!Highly recommended to prepare for ASE G1 Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair exam.

A GREAT BOOK
I ordered this book for my husband, a lifelong car nut, who has owned and restored a number of classic cars as well as the "regular" cars we drive around in. He got the book yesterday and has spent hours poring over it. He says it is a GREAT book. HE RECOMMENDS PUTTING IT FOR SALE IN AUTO PARTS STORES, because the manuals you can buy in car parts stores are for particular vehicles and are skimpy and badly written and poorly illustrated and usually out of date. People would buy THIS book, even though it's large and heavy and not cheap -- not because you'd be trying to do your own repairs but because it gives you thorough information about the innards of your vehicle, the changes (especially computer systems) in modern cars, anticipated changes -- and what the service people are likely to be (or should be) doing when you bring your car in for service. He is particularly impressed with the photos and diagrams -- so many and in full color. As a book editor, I am impressed with the author's "voice." Mr. Thompson talks on the page as if talking directly to one of his students. As a man who has taught this subject for many years, he knows what YOU want and need to know and knows how to explain it to you in down-to-earth terms.
